School Newsletter (Week 8, Term 3)

Dear Parents and Carers,

The end of Term 3 is fast approaching and I know staff and students have been working hard over the past few weeks completing drafts, providing feedback and  submitting assessment.  To keep track of your child's progress I would encourage parents/carers to download the Daymap app/software to see their child's work, feedback and achievement after marking.  This "live" online marking tool gives parents and students the ability to see and track your academic progress.  Instructions are available for parents on how to download and access Daymap through our school website.  An end of semester report card will be issued at the end of the year, and parents are encouraged to speak to their child's teachers if they have any concerns.

I want to thank parents, staff and students for their patience and understanding over the past 4 weeks as we have adjusted to the current and ongoing COVID restrictions.  While I am sure we are all looking forward to a time of no face masks and increased travel, your support and understanding during this difficult time has been appreciated.

Our college building progress continues to move ahead on schedule for the start of the 2022 school year.  At this stage we are expecting around 600 students to be enrolled at Ripley Valley State Secondary College in 2022 and I encourage any families who have siblings or friends that that are yet to enrol to do so as soon as possible.  We have a significant number of people wanting to enrol in our college next year and we want to ensure that we have the right staff and class groupings for the new year.

This week and next, there is a significant amount of building works occurring in the original areas of our school.  We have had new curtains and stage lighting installed in the "Raptordome" sports centre.  We have also commenced work on our new ANZAC mural and RAAF statue installation at the front of the college and next week we hope to install the combined football/rugby league posts on the oval.  All these works, combined with our major stage 2 buildings makes our school a very busy place at the moment.  I thank parents and students for their patience during construction and look forward to starting the new year with these new facilities.

As we approach the end of term I once again want to thank staff, students and parents for their patience and support in what has been yet another very busy and sometimes stressful season.

Yours sincerely,

Student Free Day
This Friday 3rd September was a scheduled Student Free Day.  On this day all staff were engaging in curriculum or professional development activities.
Many parents/carers wonder why there is a designated Student Free Day at this point of the year. This Friday the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) will commence confirming the results of Year 12 students in their General subjects. They require almost 3000 teachers to be involved in this process to quality assure the judgements of teachers across the state to ensure results given to students are equitable - no matter where they attend school across Queensland. To support this process, the Department of Education schedules a student free day so that education services across the state are not interrupted by the 1000s of teachers who are employed by QCAA to conduct this process from Friday until Sunday this week.
At our College we are continuing to engage in professional development by completing our First Aid qualifications and continuing to develop our curriculum for our first Year 10 students in 2022. This day allows us to have collaborative planning across our teaching teams to ensure we are aligned in our approach to Senior Schooling at Ripley Valley SSC.
Preservice Teachers
Across Term 3 we have welcomed 9 Preservice Teachers from our University Partners at QUT, UQ and USQ. I would like to acknowledge and thank our staff for their work in supporting these preservice teachers as they continue in their learning journey to become their future colleagues. All of our preservice teachers have made valuable contributions to the learning environments of our students and I know they have enjoyed their time at Ripley Valley SSC.
We have welcomed:
Ms Aiena Niesha working with Mr Sharma
Mr Alex Dawson working with Ms Starkey, Ms Vidotto and Ms Parish
Ms Damika Doorley working with Ms Starkey and Mrs Reeves
Ms Meagan Cook working with Mr Barclay
Ms Jasmin Pooley working with Ms Martins

Speech Pathology Week - 22 to 28 August 2021

Communication is a basic human right. Speech language pathologists support students with communication difficulties to learn and interact throughout their school day.

Speech Pathology Week is the opportunity to raise awareness of those in our school community who have speech language communication difficulties. Speech language pathologists work to ensure that communication is everyone’s right. Our school team, including speech language pathologists, work alongside students and their parents or carers, providing reasonable adjustments, to help them access and participate in school curriculum. Speech language pathologists may support students with their speech sound production, understanding and use of language and/or using a different method of communication.

Thank you to Mrs Nicole Anderson for all her amazing work!!!

      Welcome to Week 8!

      due_dates.png

We are very busy over the next two weeks ‘hitting the books’, with all English students in the drafting, feedback, editing, and assessment phase of the term. It is very important that students are at school, and in class as much as possible during this time to ensure they have the best chances for success.

This term in English, all students are working toward a spoken presentation that they can either present ‘live’ to the class, or pre-record at home, and submit on a USB. Although this is a spoken task, students are required to submit their written draft for feedback. To maximise their chances for success, submitting a full and complete draft on the due date is incredibly important. You will have received your child’s assessment schedule detailing draft and final submission due dates. Please encourage your child to work hard to submit a quality draft, this way feedback will only improve their result.

It is very important that students are at school, and in class as much as possible during this time to ensure they have best chances for success. If you have any concerns, please contact your child’s teacher.

      NB_2021_8_Write_a_Book_in_a_Day_1024x448.png

Last Friday, 29 students from across our college participated in the ‘Write a Book in a Day’ Competition, raising awareness and funds for the Kids Cancer Project. The competition saw our students get the ‘rules’ at 8:00am, they then had 12 hours to plan, write, edit, illustrate and publish their book; our last team finished at 7:15pm. A huge thank you to Miss Champs for her organisation and leadership of the event.

Students will be presented with their certificates on parade next week, and their books will be available to read in our school library once they are printed. Congratulations everyone!

          Science Week 2021

During Week 6 of this term we were lucky enough to celebrate Science Week. It was so wonderful to see so many students and staff engaging in activities that, hopefully, will continue to inspire and engage students in Science. Students were invited to engage in the following activities:

Monday: Make Your Own Lava Lamp

Students were invite to make your own lava lamp. Staff and students discussed the density of liquids and chemical reactions that occurred to create the lava lamp.

          Tuesday: The Mentos Challenge

Students were invited to make a prediction about which soft drink would create the biggest chemical reaction with the mentos. Most of the students predicted Pepsi and were correct! It was great to see so many students engaged in conversations to explain to their friends why they made the prediction they did.

          Wednesday: Microscope Open Day (Biology/Cells)

Students were invited to look at different cells under the microscope. They were able to see blood cells, plant cells and onion cells. All of the students were shocked to see what these cells looked like under the microscope.

          Thursday: Exploding Watermelons

Students were able to see the power of forces in action! It was incredible to watch a watermelon totally change shape before exploding. A huge shout out to Mr Dunn and Mr Clifford who had to stretch 179 rubber bands over a watermelon - the pain of Science!!!

          Friday: Bottle Rockets

On Friday, students were able to be involved in the launching of bottle rockets on the oval. Students were able to discuss appropriate modifications to result in a more successful launch.

It was such a fantastic week and I want to thank all of the staff and students who were involved. I have included some images below.

          General Notices:

          • STEM Excellence (Ignite) - we are so excited to announce the refinement of our STEM Excellence program at the College that will kick off in 2022. Students in the incoming Year 7 cohort have been invited to apply. This program will see extension opportunities across all learning areas, with particular emphasis on the STEM subjects. They will also partake in an Ignite elective to bring meaning to all of these curriculum areas in a projects based approach. The existing Ignite program will still continue with current students and we know that the curriculum approaches we develop for the new program will support us to refine and extend the existing Ignite program.
          • No hat, No play! As we approach the warmer months there is no better time to talk with your child about sun safety. We encourage all students to wear sunscreen to school and require students to wear hats when outdoors.

          Why Artsy Subjects are Important

Why should students study Art subjects? I believe that students who participate in art-related subjects become more creative and their imagination expands. Students who are creative come up with out of the box ideas and think of unimaginable things that they can express through their passion for art.

Subjects such as Visual Arts encourages students to be unpredictable and create unimaginable ideas. It creates confidence in their styles and their ideas. They express their thoughts and feelings through creating something different and unique. Artsy subjects encourage students to participate and create something new beyond the expected. It boosts self-confidence and expands imaginations. Creativity is a major influence on students participating in art because it reaches out to their emotions and what they’re feeling underneath.

Subjects such as Media and Drama creates motivation and the thought that they can be one of a kind and create something that is unlikely to be thought of by another. These subjects require confidence and the ability to get up in front of others and perform to the best of their abilities.

Music is a great self confidence booster and expands creativity levels extraordinarily because it pushes people out of their comfort zone and makes people think artistically to create something original.

Creativity is the foundation of a child's education; therefore, art is important. It improves the function of motor skills and eye-hand coordination, as well as having a significant impact on their social and emotional development. It also allows them to develop cognitively, which can enable them to improve their math skills and other subjects. Working in the arts enhances the development of creative problem-solving abilities.

Learners in Visual Arts are taught about colour, layout, perspective, and balance, which are all techniques that are required in academic work presentations. Arts activities help children develop critical thinking skills by helping them to be more cautious and thorough in their observations of the world. Students benefit from art education since it ties them to their own culture as well as the rest of the world. According to a report by Americans for the Arts, children who participate in the arts on a regular basis are four times more likely to be recognised for academic achievement, participate in a math and science fair, or win an award for writing an essay or poem than children who do not. In a 2010 study of Missouri public schools, researchers discovered that more arts education resulted in fewer disciplinary infractions, increased attendance, graduation rates, and test scores.

In conclusion, students who participate in subjects related to art is proven to influence students to have a higher attendance at school and have an increase in participation. We can all see now that students who participate in artsy subjects have a higher creativity level and have greater self confidence and higher academic achievements.

          Why study Music?

A recently released study of over 112,000 participants into the connection between music study and academic success has been getting a lot of attention lately and for good reason. We see it every day in our classrooms, but the evidence is abundantly clear – music makes you smarter!

“This large-scale study identified evidence of positive relationships between school music participation and high school exam scores in English, mathematics and science…Participation in school music (especially instrumental music) was related to higher exam scores, and students with higher levels of school music engagement had higher exam scores”

          (Gruhn et al., 2019)

          Classroom Music update:

Our Grade 7 students, fresh from submitting their musicology task, have now been playing guitar for nearly two whole weeks! All classes have been practicing extremely well and are developing the fundamental skills well enough to start attempting some more advanced songs. Our 7’s are demonstrating the values of respect, responsibility and perseverance and reaping the rewards of their hard work.

The Grade 9’s have taken to their practical studies like a duck to water preparing, three songs for their afternoon performance in Term 4. Students were introduced to performance technology this week and will begin experimenting with loop pedals, drum machines and samplers in the coming weeks.

          Music2.jpg

          Instrumental Music Update:

COVID stopped rehearsals temporarily, but all ensembles are now back in full swing as they prepare for a variety of performances in Term 4. Many students have received project pieces for Creative Showcase in Week 5 which will require a commitment of extra practice. I am extremely impressed and humbled by the dedication of our instrumental students and cannot wait to show the school community what we have been working on! Now more than ever it is essential that all students attend every lesson and rehearsal, and to also revise their knowledge at home.

Mr Krueger is always on time for his music lesson and practices regularly!

          Dance Squad

On Friday the 20th August our Dance Squad students were invited to participate in a Dance Workshop with Rania Osborne of Jeep Management. Rania is an experience professional dancer who has performed in a number of advertisements, TV shows and musicals, he is currently performing in West Side Story around Australia as Pepe. Rania gave up his time to teach our Dance Squad a routine from West Side Story. The students enjoyed participating in this workshop and hope to work with Rania again in the future.

          Dance

This week in dance the year 7's have finished off learning their performance task and began completing their draft performances! They have been continuing to practice their use of expression while they perform, as well as their ability to perform in small groups in front of their classmates. With this, the students have demonstrated what a respectful audience looks like in order to encourage their peers through what can be a daunting experience. Well done Year 7's!

          Drama - Year 8

This term, students in grade 8 are learning about Children's Theatre, script writing and performance. Students are loving applying their new skills and improvisational abilities to the test as they explore a variety of Theatre Sports designed to keep their brains working. Grade 8 Drama is lots of high-energy as they are working towards writing their scripts for their Children's Theatre performances. Students are loving the game 'Shark Attack', which pre-service teacher Mr Dawson introduced them to last week. This extreme theatre sport has the student's neck-to-neck fighting for a spot on the islands.

          Drama - Year 9

Year 9's this term are exploring Soap Opera through Melodrama. Students are using devised scripts to bring performances to life through over-the-top acting. Over the coming weeks, students will be learning performance conventions in preparation for Year 10 study. Students are encouraged to keep up the high-energy and participation as they head into rehearsal period.

          ruok.jpg

On Thursday 9th September 2021, Australians acknowledge the importance of checking in on the mental health of others through national ‘R U OK?’ Day. Although important every year, 2021 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected.

‘R U OK?’ day spreads awareness about the importance of not only asking others if they are okay, but listening to what they have to say, encouraging them to take action and continually checking in with them.

Due to a high proportion of students being involved in activities off site on that  Thursday, we will celebrate R u Ok Day on Wednesday 8th September.  Activities will include:

          - Compliment cards

          - Cupcake sale

          - Gratitude Rock Painting

          - Handball competition

          - Musical performance

          - E-Sports competition

          - Dodgeball competition

          - Capture the flag game

Resources from The Lung Foundation Australia regarding Vaping

The Lung Foundation Australia is the Australia's Peak Lung Health Advisory Body to the Australian Government's Department of Health. They are a not-for-profit organisation working to strengthen the lung health of all Australians and supporting those experiencing a lung disease.

Many schools and learning institutions have sought the Lung Foundation's assistance to address the rising number of young people vaping in schools.

In 2020 Lung Foundation Australia, in collaboration with Minderoo Foundation, commissioned Curtin University to research the chemical ingredients in 52 flavoured e-liquids for sale over the counter in Australia. This Australian first project found results which are deeply concerning:

          • 100% of liquids tested had incomplete or an inaccurate ingredient list
          • 100% of e-liquids had between 1-19 chemicals which have unknown effects on respiratory health
          • 21% of e-liquids contained nicotine (although it is illegal to sell e-liquids containing nicotine in all Australian states and territories)
          • 62% of e-liquids studied contained chemicals likely to be toxic if vaped repeatedly. Toxicity increases through the vaping process.

The Lung Foundation Australia are promoting the resources below to help Australians make informed choices about Vaping.  Please take a moment to view these resources.

          Defence News

With recent events resurfacing in Afghanistan, we reflect on how lucky we are to live here in Australia. As we watch Afghanistan’s uncertain future unfold, we are again reminded of the efforts and sacrifices made over the past twenty years by our Defence Force personnel, and their families, in the hope that a semblance of peace and independence could be brought to its people.

These recent events may bring up complex emotions for members of the veteran community, both those who served and their families. If you as a veteran, serving member or family member need to talk to someone, Safe Zone is a free and confidential service available 24/7 for current and ex-serving members on 1800 142 072. Families of serving personnel can contact the Defence Family Helpline on 1800 624 608 at all hours.

          Vietnam Veterans' Day

On 18 August, we commemorated Vietnam Veterans' Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam War was Australia's longest military engagement of the 20th Century. The arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in South Vietnam during July and August 1962 marked the start of Australia’s involvement in the war. By the time the war had come to an end, almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. Tragically, 521 of them died and 3000 were wounded.

On Vietnam Veterans' Day, we pause and reflect on the bravery, teamwork and endurance that Australians displayed throughout the war. It's a day when we recognise all who served in Vietnam. We also pause to reflect on the impact of service on our veterans' families.

          Vietnam_Vets_Day.jpg

Malaya & Borneo Veterans' Day - Commemoration

Each year on 31 August, we reflect also on the service and sacrifice of all Australian military personnel in the Malayan Emergency and the Indonesian Confrontation between 1948 and 1966. We thank those men and women who selflessly answered the call to protect those whose freedoms and way of life were compromised.
