Defence News

Defence News

With recent events resurfacing in Afghanistan, we reflect on how lucky we are to live here in Australia. As we watch Afghanistan’s uncertain future unfold, we are again reminded of the efforts and sacrifices made over the past twenty years by our Defence Force personnel, and their families, in the hope that a semblance of peace and independence could be brought to its people.

These recent events may bring up complex emotions for members of the veteran community, both those who served and their families. If you as a veteran, serving member or family member need to talk to someone, Safe Zone is a free and confidential service available 24/7 for current and ex-serving members on 1800 142 072. Families of serving personnel can contact the Defence Family Helpline on 1800 624 608 at all hours.

Vietnam Veterans' Day

On 18 August, we commemorated Vietnam Veterans' Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam War was Australia's longest military engagement of the 20th Century. The arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in South Vietnam during July and August 1962 marked the start of Australia’s involvement in the war. By the time the war had come to an end, almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. Tragically, 521 of them died and 3000 were wounded.

On Vietnam Veterans' Day, we pause and reflect on the bravery, teamwork and endurance that Australians displayed throughout the war. It's a day when we recognise all who served in Vietnam. We also pause to reflect on the impact of service on our veterans' families.

Malaya & Borneo Veterans' Day - Commemoration

Each year on 31 August, we reflect also on the service and sacrifice of all Australian military personnel in the Malayan Emergency and the Indonesian Confrontation between 1948 and 1966. We thank those men and women who selflessly answered the call to protect those whose freedoms and way of life were compromised.
