Dear Parents & Caregivers,
It is hard to believe that we are already half-way through the school year. We are already undertaking significant planning for next year and the increased opportunities available to our current and future students. While life doesn't seem to slow down, it is nice to take a breath and reflect on our progress to date.
Over the past few weeks I have had the privilege to see and hear our students achieve some remarkable results in a variety of fields. Whether it has been watching our sporting teams win several grand finals in a variety of competitions, seeing our vocal and music groups performing at various shows and eisteddfods or presenting a number of our students with Maths certificates for achieving in the top 1% of maths students globally. Whatever the event, competition or achievement it has been amazing to witness our students demonstrating our college values of Respect, Responsibility and Perseverance. Nothing brings a smile to my face more than to see students encouraging others, giving things another attempt after not succeeding the first or second time or arriving to training in the cold to achieve that better result. Personal character always precedes any other great achievement and it is pleasing to see our students growing and achieving in these domains.
For those who have visited our college recently, you will have noticed the construction fencing that has been installed as works commence on our Stage 3 facilities. Over the next 12 months, the new Performing Arts Centre (PAC) and J block under-croft classrooms will be built and I am looking forward to these exciting new spaces taking shape over the coming months. I appreciate everyone's patience during this time and look forward to being able to walk people through these new facilities in 2024.
As we prepare for the 2024 school year, plans are already well under way for our celebrations as we commemorate our 5th year since opening and our 1st year of year 12 graduates. Final planning is being completed for our inaugural senior formal, graduation and 5 year celebrations. Combined with these celebrations, we are always looking at things we can improve within our existing school processes and procedures. One such area of focus for 2024 is our parent teacher interviews. We value the fact that parents engage with our staff and book in for parent teacher interviews. Each year we struggle to accommodate the number of parent requests within the existing times and as a result next year we are proposing a change to these times. Based on parent and staff feedback, we are looking to make parent teacher interviews in 2024 operate from 1pm to 7pm with teachers having the morning from 8.45-12pm to undertake professional development and planning. This would mean students will not attend school on parent teacher interview day, however students can attend the parent teacher interview with their parent/carer. We hope that by increasing the time availability all parents/carers can book in to see their child's teacher and also provide some much needed professional development time for staff. This proposal will be taken to the P & C and staff for consultation and endorsement before the 28th of July so that dates and information can be distributed to parents/students for the 2024 school year.
As always, if you have any feedback or suggestions for how we can improve our college or processes please contact myself or the college at principal@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au
Yours Sincerely,
Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions about the Semester 1 Report Card.
Once again, I find myself amazed at how quickly the year has flown by. We are only a couple of weeks away from the half-way mark and yet the beginning of the year seems like a rather recent memory. It has, however, been a busy Term, and before we reach the holidays there are still plenty of key events on the College calendar. Indeed, over the last two weeks of Term many of our students will have the opportunity to be involved in the: Careers Expo, Interhouse Track and Field Carnival, Year 10 Work Experience, ATSIAP State Finals, and the End of Term Rewards Trip.
Positive Behaviour for Education (PBL) Update
In the PBL space, our students have also had the opportunity to reflect on our core values of: Respect, Responsibility and Perseverance as they engage in their fortnightly PBL lessons. The focus of the last few weeks has been the importance of perseverance and showing responsibility by owning your behaviours. As part of these lessons, students examined the acronym OARBED which illustrates the importance of getting out of BED and onto the OARs (see below):
The Ripley Way Podcast
This term also saw the creation of The Ripley Way – a podcast designed to examine our fortnightly PBL focus through interviews with our wonderful staff and students. The podcast is hosted by our own Mr Meredith and is featured on the College social media sites. To listen to the latest episode, click on the following link: https://youtu.be/ubS3a53pWUg
End of Term Rewards Trip: Urban Xtreme
The End of Term Rewards Trip will take place on Friday 23rd June to Urban Xtreme. Spaces are limited to 250 with only limited spaces available at this time.
Congratulations
The end of Week 7 (Friday 2nd June) marked the end of Unit 1 for all Year 11 students. Over the first 17 weeks of this year, students have been working on a variety of assessment tasks that have not only assessed their abilities in their current subjects, but also provided valuable feedback for further assessment tasks.
Doc Rivers (NBA player and coach) says "Average players want to be left alone. Good players want to be coached. Great players want to be told the truth". The feedback that students receive across all their learning experiences is only as valuable as their mindset on how they receive it. If a student is unwilling to receive feedback then it will not make any changes, only when a student is willing to receive and apply feedback will changes and growth occur. I encourage all students to reflect on the feedback they have received over the course of this unit and apply it to the required areas for further development.
As student embark on the start of Unit 2, I wish them all the best and will continue to champion and encourage them to reach their dreams and their potential.
Unit One Senior Report Cards
Unit One Senior Report Cards will be issued via email to all parents/carers on Monday 12th June). These report cards will contain a cumulative result based upon all summative assessment completed across Unit 1. Teachers will also provide a Behaviour, Effort and Homework result for your student. These will be sent via an automated email from the information stored on One School. If there have been changes to your active email address, please update your details with our Administration Staff (administration@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au) to ensure you receive your child's report. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions about the Unit 1 Report Card
QCE Reviews
On Wednesday 14th June, Year 11 students and their parents/carers will be required to participate in a QCE review. During this process students and parents will meet with a member of the College’s Leadership team to review their Unit 1 progress and their intended pathway. This meeting is an opportunity for students to identify on areas for improvement, set goals and make adjustments to their pathway if required. These meetings can be booked on Daymap and will be held in the Ripley Valley SSC Library between 8am and 4.30pm.

School Laptop Expectations - Being prepared for learning
We are seeing an increased number of students coming to school with laptops that have not been charged. Please ensure you have a system at home to help remind your child to put their laptops on charge each night so that they are prepared for learning each day.
Chargers are NOT allowed at school as they are a safety hazard. Student laptop batteries are made to last all day - and if they are not lasting a school day, they need to visit Tech Support.
Students are also required to bring their laptop case to school each day, and have the Ripley Valley sticker on their laptops at all times as it provides extra protection for their device. Cases are $35 to replace, and stickers are $10 to replace. If you have any questions please email:
tech@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au

ASSESSMENT! ASSESSMENT! ASSESSMENT!
We are in the peak assessment period across the English faculty. Encouraging students to prioritise tasks and seek support early will help reduce the stress and anxiety that often increases at this time.
A reminder that English Homework Club is open every first break to support all students.
On Thursday 1st June, our Junior Reader's Cup team competed in the Brisbane West Regional Competition. Our team flexed their brain muscles and did an exceptional job representing our school, tying for fourth place with Saint Edmunds, beating 23 other teams! It was one cheeky question where the answer was to be found in the author's notes pages that got us in the end. Congratulation’s gentlemen! We are so proud of you and are looking forward to seeing you bring your A game to the competition next year.
We also love to see students in the classroom building their skills. This term, Ms Brown’s Year 9 English classes have been building their evaluative language skills – literally! Students have built a word wall of positive and negative adjectives and adverbs to use when critiquing documentaries. We can’t wait to see how they use these parts of speech in their upcoming assessment!!
On Thursday 8th June, students, parents and our community enjoyed our college Careers Expo. This is an exciting time as our students and their families begin to contemplate future pathways and subject selections. Please find below information relating to the various pathway’s English offers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the college or via email jbunt18@eq.edu.au, your child’s English teacher, or their Head of Year.
Thank you to Ms Champs, Ms Brown and Ms Marks for their contributions to this edition.
Ellen Grant
Head of Department - Science - Year 8F to 8I
Next term will see Year 7's and 8's swapping into HPE, and the HPE students coming over to Humanities. They will be looking at all thing ancient and medieval in History, and water and mountains in Geography in Semester 2.
Year 9 students will move into Geography for Semester 2, looking at global interconnections.
Our senior students will be shifting into Unit 2 of their respective subjects. Spoiler alert! – The work gets more intensive, and the difficulty increases. So the good work ethic shown needs to continue into Semester 2.
Students have had excellent opportunities this semester with interactive displays, extra-curricular clubs and immersive content. This will continue into next term, with a number of excursions or incursions planned.
Have a safe and restful holiday, see you bright and bubbly for Term 3!
Cecilia Hall
Head of Department - Humanities and Languages - Year 9E to 9G
Japanese
In Language, the past couple of weeks have involved students being studious all round as they try their best during assessment time – yoku dekimashita!
Year 9 are writing letters to friends in Japan while practising their three scripts of kanji, katakana and hiragana on traditional Japanese writing paper, genkoyoshi, which requires writing from the right side of the page to the left while writing vertically.
Year 8 have completed their exams for discussing events at school in calendars. They are excited to be able to soon attend the Consulate of Japan as well as eat teppanyaki early in Term 3.
The Japanese students in Year 7 are grateful to Alison Collins for visiting our class and sharing her knowledge about symbols that represent water and landforms in her Indigenous craft. Prior to her visit, the class learnt about the value of water in their Geography unit, hieroglyphs in Ancient Egypt and they know the Japanese kanji for water 川. The students were actively mesmerised and they respectfully asked Ms Collins questions.
Recent Kahoot lessons to our sister school in Japan have involved our students learning about culture and geography in Japan. We think the students in Japan are so kind that they let us win! In return, Year 7's are now creating their own Kahoot about Australian sports, hobbies and tourism to share with Mr Kawana’s students in Japan.
We are currently looking at options for students in Year 9 to Year 12 at Ripley to visit Japan during the Easter holidays of 2025, and more information will be available soon.
Georgina Wellwood
Japanese Teacher
In Year 9 Media, students have been exploring the art of macro photography, drawing inspiration from renowned photographer Slinkachu and his captivating work with mini figurines. Armed with their cameras and creative vision, they ventured into a miniature world, capturing their characters to tell captivating stories through their macro shots. Through this project, students not only honed their technical skills but also learned to think outside the box and appreciate the beauty that can be found in the smallest of things.
Year 10 Visual Art
The Year 10 Visual Art students have completed their self portraits at the end of Term 1. They have shown true commitment, perseverance and dedication to their paintings and the results speak for themselves. Great work Year 10 Art!
Next, students have embarked on an exciting project where they are fusing creativity with sustainability by crafting wearable art items. Drawing inspiration from a notable piece of art from the past, they explored innovative ways to repurpose materials and reduce waste. Through their designs, they not only celebrated the artistic legacy but also contributed to a more environmentally conscious future. We cant wait to show you the end result in a few weeks!
Head of Department - Creative Industries and Food Studies - Year 8A to 8E

Our Dance Academy students are busily working on their jazz choreography. In this task they have focused on creating a technically difficult routine including a variety of turns, leaps, kicks and complex phrases whilst linking their actions with the music. This assessment piece wraps up their jazz unit as next term the class will move onto studying the contemporary style.
As the Dance Academy classes also form a representative performance team we are able to take them out to local and regional dance competitions. The students work on these routines in their class time as it aligns with the performance element of the curriculum. In Week 9 the team will be competing with their jazz routine at the Ipswich Dance Eisteddfod and we are looking forward to seeing them up on stage again!
7 Dance
Year 7 Dance are wrapping up their final assessment task and have submitted their choreography draft. Their creativity shines as they integrated iconic movements from various eras, many before their years. With their final assessment due next week, this sadly brings Year 7 Dance to an end for 7B, 7E and 7F. We hope to see them selecting the subject in Year 9 and can't wait to meet our next bunch of Year 7's next term!
9 Dance
The Year 9 Dance class are in the midst of submitting their choreography task in Musical Theatre. They have had much fun creating routines to a medley of songs including "Hard Knock Life", "Roxie" and "Mamma Mia". The students have worked in groups of three where each group member is responsible for choreographing one of the above songs. The students have had to incorporate the use of a prop to help communicate the intent of the piece. This group of Year 9's have been particularly creative with their use of space, relationships and props. The second part of this task is to complete a written statement of intent where each choreographer justifies the choices they made to create their routine. It has been marvellous teaching this group of students this Semester and we look forward to welcoming the Semester 2, Year 9 dance students in Term 3.
10 Dance
Year 10 Dance have completed their draft for their hip hop choreography task, displaying exceptional teamwork and creativity throughout the process. They have faced and overcome numerous hurdles from initial challenges of teamwork and complex creative ideas but they have persevered. As they approach their final submission during exam block we are excited to see all their performances. Next term they tackle the challenging style of contemporary.
11 Dance
Year 11 Dance have recently completed their first senior unit, ending with individual choreography in the style of contemporary dance. In Unit 2, students will explore how physical and virtual environments have an impact on the choreographer’s creative process and selection of dance concepts, and the performer’s use of the dance skills to communicate meaning. Students synthesise their knowledge and understanding of the conventions of each environment and analyse, interpret and evaluate dance, justifying the manipulation of movement through the application of dance concepts and skills to communicate meaning. Students develop their knowledge and understanding of dance concepts and skills through a study of various physical and virtual dance environments. These concepts, skills and environments are those used by choreographers and performers in Australia.
8 Drama
After writing their own Children's Theatre script based on a children's story or folktale, Year 8 Drama students will now bring their creativity to life as the student-devised scripts are transformed into live productions. The Drama team is hopeful that these performances can strengthen our community partnerships as some of our students may present their Children's Theatre pieces for younger students.
11 Drama
This term, Year 11 Drama students have created their own unique concept for a piece of Verbatim Theatre that reflects real stories and exact words from real people. The research and discussion around this topic has brought about many mature moments of reflection and it has been fantastic to see the Year 11's applying 21st Century skills to communicate our stories and history.
Year 11 Drama in Practice students have created a Design Folio, designing the costume, sets, lighting and sound for a Verbatim Theatre production of A Town Named War Boy. This performance used diary entries and letters from WWI soldiers to demonstrate the full impact of war. It has been terrific to see Drama in Practice students consider how design could be used to further create meaning for modern audiences.
7 Music
In Year 7 Music, students have finished their performance assessment! After performing, students are now working on developing their composition skills. Students have been using the online DAW SoundTrap to create pieces of music that manipulate the elements of music to create meaning. Students have also been developing their lyric writing skills. For their assessment, students will be creating a composition that relates to a chosen theme.
9 Music
Year 9 Students completed their first performance task and are now applying their practical and theoretical skills into composing. Students are learning about the roles of melody, harmony and rhythm and the nuances in which they blend and work together. The class has taken to composing like ducks to water accepting the creative risk taking that is involved, and experimenting to create their own unique music.
11 Music
Year 11 students have just finished their second task of senior, wrapping up their very first unit of senior study! This semester students have been examining how music can communicate ideas and concepts to audiences through performance and composition.
Moving into our new unit, students have begun examining the concept of identifing and responding to music that expresses cultural, political and social identities in both local and global contexts. What better way to start such a unit than with a debate! The Year 11 class split into two halves this week and debated if Waltzing Matilda should replace Advance Australia Fair as our national anthem. The students deconstructed and examined historical and social significance, lyrical content and the musical construction of each song weighing the merits against the Australian Identity.
CERTIFICATE COURSES Next year we are introducing the Certificate II in Dance! This pathway qualification provides individuals technical skills and knowledge to prepare for work in the live performance industry. The qualification is designed for those with a foundational level of lyrical, jazz or ballet dance techniques. Students may have experience in amateur performances, community events, or have attended dance classes. They will be at the beginning of their career developing performance skills in various genres with job prospects as a trainee dance performer in the industry. The Certificate II in Dance will have a large focus on practical skills and some theoretical knowledge in a defined context. Students will incorporate artistic expression and expressive techniques in performances for audiences. All students completing this Certificate will be required to perform live at eisteddfods as a representative team for RVSSC. For more information about this new subject, please email Miss Doorley at ddoor4@eq.edu.au
In 2024, we will be introducing the Certificate III Community Dance, Theatre and Events. It is a flexible arts subject that covers a broad range of jobs and skills in the creative industries. This certificate covers Dance, Music and Drama at an industry level and the course is tailored to the individual. Students may dance, sing, act, compose music, play an instrument, write scripts, design lighting, sound or sets; choreograph or direct. Students will hone their chosen craft, while working together on performance events. Students will be responsible for the creation, ticketing and marketing of their annual event. This may be a showcase of their combined skills, a play, a charity fundraising performance or a musical. From the budgeting and costuming to the food and venue, the possibilities for their events are endless. Each cohort of students makes these choices with the guidance of their teacher and through experiences with outside industry professionals. Through this course, students grow as individual entrepreneurial artists while learning to work collaboratively on events. The skills gained in their own craft, knowledge of event management and networking make this certificate a great choice for any student looking to turn their passion for performance into transferable and employable skills. For more information about this new subject, please email Miss O'Neill at
krone0@eq.edu.auEXTRA - CURRICULAR
We offer many extra-curricular groups in the Performing Arts across Dance, Drama, Music and Instrumental Music. Students enter these groups via audition. For those students who may have an interest in the Performing Arts but are not quite ready to trial for a team, we will be offering fun "come and try" activities across the Term at lunch times. Keep an eye on notices for these events.
Junior and Senior Dance Squad
Our Squad teams are ramping up their rehearsals to get ready for the Ipswich Eisteddfod. We are entering six Squad routines across two days where students will get to compete against schools in the region out at the Ipswich Civic Centre. Students will be performing the styles of Jazz, Contemporary and Musical Theatre. The students are super excited to compete again after their win at the last eisteddfod in April. This will be the team's second competition this year and as a college it is our fourth one since we started competing last year in 2022. We are so proud of how far our team has come in a year. Good luck to our Junior and Senior Dance Squads!
Cheer
This semester the cheerleading team have been working towards building and fine tuning their cheerleading skills. There has been a strong focus on improving jumping, tumbling and stunting abilities. The athletes have been working with their Main Stunt, and Second stunt groups hitting stunts at waist, prep and extension level. In recent weeks, the team have begun to be placed in formations for their routine and are beginning the choreography. Although, the only performance opportunity available for this team this year is the end of year showcase, the athletes and coach remain working towards a common goal of ensuring everyone leaves practice safely and that everyone is progressing every week.
Drama Troupe
The Drama Troupe have been refining their performance skills and improvisation techniques. Through exploring different characters, they are gaining confidence in their movement, voice and ability to portray a wide range of roles. These practices help students with other useful core skills such as, communication, teamwork, adaptability, self-confidence and active listening. The group has made incredible improvements in their performances in the last few weeks. Next term, the Drama Troupe will begin working on pieces for our Annual Arts Showcase.
Instrumental Music
Our instrumental performers will be up stage to share their talent with you at the P&C Christmas in July Bingo Night on Saturday 22nd July. All ensembles will participate in the evening with a lot of perfecting to happen over the next 5 rehearsals. Get your ticket now and come along to enjoy a night of fun with fantastic entertainment from our Stage Band, Rock Band and Vocal performers. All proceeds raised at this event are going to the instrumental department to help fund Instrumental Uniforms for our performers.
On the Ipswich Show weekend, the Stageband performed Mr Blue Sky, Mack the Knife and I Want You Back in their first ever public performance. The students performed extremely well showcasing the persistence and dedication of our performers.
Instrumental students in 2023 are learning up to 12 unique pieces of music this year across 4 different ensembles. This requires a lot of practice to make such high quality performances possible and Mr Ezzy thanks all instruments students for their efforts.
Vocal Ensemble
We are ecstatic to announce that the RVSSC Vocal Ensemble rocked their first public performance in Week 5. They competed two songs at the Ipswich Junior Music Eisteddfod after only 8 weeks of rehearsing together. Out of ten competitors, the ensemble received the Highly Commended Award, placing them in fifth place. Our school was the only state high school at the competition and were up against very strong groups. They persevered through nerves and showed incredible bravery in front of the large audience. Their amazing result is a testament to the talent of the RVSSC students and a reflection of the hard work of Miss O’Neill, Mr. Coles and the Performing Arts faculty. Well done to all involved!
Creative Generation
With only 5 weeks until Show Week for Creative Generations, our students are polishing their repertoire and finding the plethora of costuming pieces required to make the show amazing. Our dancers have been busy each weekend at rehearsals with the CGEN choreographers, as well as rehearsing after school with our staff.
Meanwhile, our 2x Featured Choir vocalists have both been successful in gaining positions as Section leaders, which means they will use microphones throughout the show, producing the primary backing choir vocals for the show, as well as lead the massed choir of roughly 300 students. This is a great experience and opportunity for both students, as they work intensively with one of Australia's most successful vocal coaching companies, Vocal Manoeuvres Academy, over the coming weeks.
Tickets can still be bought through Ticketek. The performances are from the Thursday 13th July to Sunday the 16th July, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. We also have 50 students who are part of our performing arts subjects and extra-curricular groups heading in to watch the matinee performance on Friday 14th July. These productions are always amazing, and it is always wonderful to see the talent students have from all over Queensland.
Showcase
We are busy behind the scenes getting all of the prep work done for Showcase. It's shaping up to be an awesome show! Students will be advised of their performances early Term 3 and information packs will be send home with all the important dates.

Interhouse Athletics:
A reminder of the upcoming Interhouse Athletics Carnival that will occur on Thursday 15th June (nomination only) and Friday 16th June (full-school event).
Here is some information provided from our Sports Coordinator - Mr Clifford.
We are coming into my personal favourite event of the year, the College’s Athletics Carnival. This is an exciting year for our athletics scene as we have made some key changes to the carnival:
- The first big change is that the pre-events have been condensed into a single day carnival on Thursday 15th June. In the past, these have run at lunch times in the two weeks leading up to the Carnival and many students have missed events because of this. ANZAC SERVICES
Term 2 has seen two ANZAC Day services held at Ripley Valley SSC, along with an invitation for our Principal and Defence Peer Mentors to attend Ripley Central State School's very first ANZAC Day service.
Our Defence Peer Mentors, Jackson Sheen and Ben Coop, delivered a speech at the Providence ANZAC Day Dawn service that was held at the College, which was a very proud moment both for their parents and the College.
Our College ANZAC assembly was a moving tribute to our ANZAC's. The service was attended by representatives of the Ipswich Council and officiated by Royal Australian Air Force Chaplain, Wayne Ross, who delivered words of reflection and a prayer.
Our Defence Peer Mentors will be kept busy in the following two terms, with the upcoming commemorations for the Battle of Fromelles, Vietnam Veterans Day and Remembrance Day.THE DEFENCE MEMBER AND FAMILY HOTLINE
