School Newsletter (Week 4, Term 2)

Dear Parent/Carer,

This past few weeks have seemed very fast-paced with the two public holidays and Ipswich show holiday making time fly at school.  The combination of short school weeks, extra curricula activities, NAPLAN and stage 2 building works have all made us feel a little frazzled at times.  As always in times of increased activity or change it is important for people to look after themselves and I encourage everyone to make time to do so.  I was impressed recently when I attended a recent Student Representative Council meeting where the students ran some well-being and mind-fullness lunchtime activities to encourage and support each other.  Initiatives like this, and many others that occur throughout the school year support our staff and students to develop resilience and gratefulness in tough times.

Later this term, students will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Well-being (QEW) Survey.  We know that well-being and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The department and our college are looking at ways to collect information on these important areas so we can support our students in the best way possible.

The QEW Survey is designed to measure how state school students view their well-being and engagement.  Results from this survey will tell us about students’ levels of well-being and engagement. This information will allow us to better support our students and meet their needs.

This year, the QEW Survey will take place between Monday 31st May to Friday 25th June.  An information letter will be sent out to parents and carers closer to the time. If you have any questions, please contact the school.

For those parents who have visited the college recently, you will have noticed that the Stage 2 building works and progressing quickly and despite some wet weather, the new buildings are on track to be finished before the end of this year, and ready for classes at the start of 2022.  Keep updated on progress through our Facebook page as we regularly update photos and images.

In other news, this week I was informed that our College was successful in obtaining a $10,000 grant to enhance and improve our ANZAC memorial at the front of the college.  Plans are already underway for a mural, sculptures and landscaping to further improve this space and we hope to unveil these for our Remembrance Day service in November.

While buildings are important I know that people matter more.  As I walk around the college I am constantly reminded of the great staff, students and volunteers that make up our great college community.  We all have a part to play and your involvement in you're child's education, well-being and development together with the school ensure that we will achieve our college motto of Achieving Excellence Together.

Yours sincerely,

NAPLAN Online
Thank you to all students, staff and parents/carers for such a successful start to our NAPLAN Online Testing schedule. All Year 7 and Year 9 students will finish the schedule with their Numeracy Tests on Monday. Year 9 students in Period 1 and Year 7 students in Period 3.
If your child has missed any of the scheduled tests, they will have the opportunity to participate in Catch Up on Tuesday 18th May in Student Services. Please ask them to check the School Notices for their name and session times.
Assessment Schedules
Assessment Schedules will be coming home with your students next week in a hard copy. The electronic version of the document will be available on Daymap and requires a PDF Viewer to be downloaded to your mobile phone or other electronic device. Daymap is very responsive to parent/carer feedback about any issues you are experiencing with the website or APP. Please contact tech@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au with any feedback or issues you have with Daymap about their software and we will either problem solve at the College or get in contact with Daymap on your behalf.
Assessment - Applying for an extension
As we head into the Assessment season for the Semester, it is timely to remind you that our College has an electronic process to support your child in applying for an extension. From the Student Sharepoint page (which automatically opens when your child opens their Internet Browser) students click on the link to make their application. You will then be advised via email regarding the outcome of the process and new due dates for your child.

Focus of the Fortnight
Our positive College culture is supported by the College Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework.  Each fortnight we focus on one of the College values of Respect, Responsibility and Perseverance.  This fortnight the focus is: I can persevere to succeed through practising mindfulness.  During parade this week I spoke to the students about the power of a positive mindset and giving 100% effort to the task that they are working on.  I also spoke about the importance of time management and keeping a to-do list in their student diary to improve time management.  Students will learn more about mindfulness by completing a range of engaging activities during Access Class over the next couple of weeks.
Positive College Behaviour
We have a high expectations culture and this is reflected in our behaviour data which last Term saw over 97% of students with between 0 and 2 major behaviour incidents. At the end of Week 1 of this Term, students attended a Rewards Afternoon to recognise their high attendance.  This Term, students will attend a rewards afternoon at Sky Zone in Week 10 in recognition of students with high attendance and positive behaviour.  In Term 4, students will be eligible to receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze Raptor Award depending on their level of achievement.  The Raptor Awards are a holistic award that takes into account student academic achievement, attendance, behaviour and contribution to College culture through participation in extra curricular activities.

With so many of our students actively using social media and with a large percentage admitting to having multiple accounts on various social media platforms, it is a timely reminder to please ensure you are supervising the use of your child's social media accounts.  At school, students have been talking about 'Finsta's'. A finsta is a fake Instagram account - where students are creating accounts that parents do not know about, and in some cases, a place to post content so friends / family cannot see.
We are also hearing about 'burner phones', where students have a phone their parents know about and monitor, and another phone that parents do not know about and has all their fake social media accounts stored. Unfortunately, it is usually from these fake social media accounts that bullying occurs. It is imperative that parents work with their children to ensure they are safe online.
Please talk to your child about these dangerous behaviours, and remind them of the appropriate use of social media. We encourage you to post any information about these behaviours, or incidents at www.stymie.com.au

School laptop Expectations
We are seeing an increased number of students coming to school with laptops that have not been charged. Please ensure you have a system at home to help remind your child to put their laptops on charge each night so that they are prepared for learning each day. Chargers are NOT allowed at school as they are a safety hazard. Student laptop batteries are made to last all day - and if they are not lasting a school day, they need to visit Tech Support. Students are also required to bring their laptop case to school each day, and have the Ripley Valley sticker on their laptops at all times as it provides extra protection for their device. Cases are $35 to replace, and stickers are $10 replace. If you have any questions please email tech@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au

        Literacy Intervention
Nicole Anderson is our fantastic Speech Pathologist at RVSSC. Together we have established intervention groups to support our students to be confident and successful speakers and readers.

        Reading Club

Reading Club is a select group of students who will be working on improving their reading skills, supported by the school’s Speech Pathologist and a Teacher Aide.  The group focuses on building the foundation skills needed to develop fluent and accurate reading, as well as practicing using technology to help reduce any barriers that a reading difficulty may present.

        Chat Group

Chat group is a select group of students who will be working on developing social communication and conversation skills.  These skills are essential in successfully participating in our school and wider community, and in forming and maintaining positive relationships with others. This group meets during lunch time on Wednesday's. A light snack may also be provided for students during their participation.

If you have any questions regarding Chat Group, please do not hesitate to contact the school Speech Pathologist, Nicole Anderson, on nande205@eq.edu.au

This week, the Languages Faculty launched RVSSC's Inaugural Paper Cranes Project.

In Japanese culture, origami paper cranes symbolise hope and wishes granted. Legend has it that if a person folds one thousand cranes, their wishes would be fulfilled.

Ms Wellgood has tied this initiative in with our PBL focus as a mindfulness activity which means that every student at RVSSC has had the opportunity to contribute to the first 1000 cranes.

The first thousand cranes will be gifted to our college as a gesture of hope and prosperity. However, as our college grows, the Languages faculty hope to fold 1000 origami cranes each year to gift to our local community, including our local first responders and hospital.

Students can get involved during lunchtimes, with prizes and rewards on offer for the most paper cranes folded.

If you have a suggestion for the next 1000 cranes, please contact Ms Wellgood.

On Friday 30th April, our Year 9 Humanities students enjoyed the experience of researching in the state library, as well as the Queensland museum. In preparing for their upcoming assessment, students accessed secondary sources in the state library, but more importantly, were immersed in primary sources available at the ANZAC Legacy Gallery.

The Anzac Legacy Gallery tells the fascinating story of the First World War in Queensland; the people and the things they held close – objects of war and warfare, and personal items belonging to those on the front line.

Of particular interest is the Mephisto - named Mephisto by its German crew.  The 30-tonne tank was part of an advance towards the French town of Amiens, resulting in the capture of Villers- Bretonneux, a small French village that was recaptured by Australian soldiers at the cost of 1,200 lives. During the battle, Mephisto became stuck in a shell crater and was abandoned by its crew. It remained on the battlefield for months before troops of the 26th Battalion AIF, composed mainly of Queenslanders, regained lost ground and retrieved it, dragging the tank behind Australian lines under cover of darkness. It was sent to Australia as a war trophy, and it remains the sole surviving A7V tank in the world.

Eventually Mephisto was shipped to Brisbane and preserved at Queensland Museum where our Year 9 Students were able to see primitive technology up close, deepening their understanding of, and connection to World War I.

Special thanks to Mr Sharma, Mrs Sipple, Mrs Easdale for their organisation of the day, and our wonderful teacher aides for their support in supervising the students.

                Maths, Science & HPE

It is so great to write to you all as we head towards the middle of Term 2. This term has seemed to fly by with so many short weeks due to public holidays and other events. This has been sure to keep all staff and students very busy.

Earlier this term we farewelled Annie Gamlan who started at the College as one of the foundation staff members in 2020. I want to thank Annie for all of the expertise and support she was able to offer to the College in her time with us.

Some notices that I would like to make you aware of:

                • In Mathematics, students are all currently working towards the completion of assignments. These will all be submitted via Daymap and information regarding due dates can be found on Daymap. If, for any reason, your child needs to apply for an extension this should be done online and more information can be found in their student diary or on the College SharePoint page.
                • Mathematics tutoring will be starting up in Week 5 on Thursdays at 1st break. This will be a space where students who cannot attend Homework club on Tuesday afternoons can come to seek additional support for Mathematics.
                • Year 7 students have started to engage with practical experiments in science. Students must comply with the College’s uniform to be allowed to engage in these lessons as a matter of safety. Please ensure your child has the appropriate leather footwear available and their hair tied up.
                • At the end of this term, students will participate in an Athletics carnival. It is recommended that any students who wishes to be competitive on the day should be accessing relevant training in preparation now.

If you ever have any questions around what is happening within your child's Maths, Science or HPE, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me.

                DANCE

All Dance students have now officially finished their theory units and are back in the Dance room. It was great to see so many excellent results come in after theory exams and assignments but most of all the effort and perseverance shown across these units were outstanding.  Year 9’s wrote and recorded a podcast that critiqued the use of the elements of Dance from the contemporary Andrew Winghart routine “Cry me a river.” Year 7’s sat an exam where they evaluated the jazz routine “Ruby Blue”.

Now that we are back into prac we will see year 7 students working together to create their own Popular Dance routine. Year 9 students are choreographing a contemporary routine that has to show the emotion of either love or hate. All classes will showcase their work for assessment in week 9.

                DANCE SQUAD

The Dance Squad has been rehearsing hard to complete their contemporary routine. They train every Wednesday morning at 7.15am. This year the team is working on skill development and will be partaking in performance opportunities internally within the school and also out in the community. As the squad’s skills grow we will look at entering local competitions. Soon the team will move onto learning their Hip Hop routine (which is highly anticipated). Costumes should be arriving soon so that our students will look (and dance) the part!

                DRAMA

Drama students are having fun in the classroom as they participate in improvisational acting activities. This helps to develop their confidence and skills as they move into rehearsing their Children’s Theatre scripts. Students created their own storyline which is aimed at Prep aged students. They had to come up with a moral of the story and then turn their ideas into a script which they will then perform on stage for assessment in week 9. Year 8 students who are studying Drama this year will get to select Drama as an elective subject for year 9 next year.

                ART
Its hard to spend a lot of time drawing and then erase it all. That is exactly what our year 8 art students are doing through their extinction studies. They are exploring different techniques to remove their work, drawing from real taxiderm animals hired from the Queensland Natural Museum.

Year 10 - Subject Information Night and PPP Sessions
We have been busy preparing for our Year 9 students transitioning to Year 10 in only 7 months. This transition to Senior School is a big change for students (and parents!).
Over the coming weeks our year 9 parents will be notified of a Year 10 parent information session, where we will provide you with valuable information on what to expect in Senior School, what pathway options are available to our students and of course information on Subjects. Our Pathway Preparation Planning (PPP) sessions will happen in the first few weeks of Term 3, and is an opportunity for parents and students to sit down individually with a member of staff to plan their individual pathway. These sessions are mandatory for all year 9 students, and will help set students and families up for success next year.
                University Experience Days
I have began posting various University opportunity and experience days onto Daymap for any interested students. These are great days for those students thinking they might like to attend university after school, and gives students a chance to visit areas of interest. The most recent is in Bio-Medicine. If your child is interested in a Science/Medicine degree this could be of interest. Please email me for further information.

Term 2 has started off with a bang and already see's the planning for the upcoming Interhouse Athletics and Rewards Day preparations taking place. Both Miss Starkey and I are keen to see how the students apply themselves to meet the criteria of "Attendance and Behaviour" to attend the End of Term 2 Rewards Day on Wednesday 23rd June (Week 10). It is important that students maintain a 95% approved Attendance rate, in addition, no less than a "C" on their behaviour this term to be eligible to attend this Rewards Day. Any student who does not meet both criteria will unfortunately not be able to attend.

The current venue that has been decided by the Rewards Team at RVSSC has been locked in and it looks like Skyzone, MacGregor has been a favourite amongst the students. This will see our reward recipients engaging in fun-filled activities with their fellow students such as: trampoline jumping, ninja warrior courses and trampoline dodgeball to name a few. In regards to the price, the locked in price for students who have met the criteria to attend the Rewards Day is $20 (excluding transport fee - TBA). This will cover the students entry fee, in addition the socks required for them to wear whilst at Skyzone. It is recommended students pack their own lunch, or bring additional monies to purchase food from the canteen at Skyzone. There will be more information on Daymap, school notices and assemblies regarding the Rewards Day.

The Interhouse Cross Country Carnival was a success, and at the end of the day it was the Goolman Geckos who walked away with the trophy! See points below:

                - Goolman = 1st - 608 points

                - Perry = 2nd = 596 points

                - Flinders = 3rd = 584 points

                - Blaine = 4th = 528 points

Goolman House Captains Sophie & Jack accepted the Interhouse Cross Country Trophy on behalf of all Goolman students and were congratulated on assembly by the rest of their peers.

Blue Edge Graduation: The Final Edge

From Week 1 to Week 8 of Term 1, the Blue Edge program was conducted for a collection of students of Ripley Valley State Secondary College. The program incorporated physical activities and exercises along with mental health development sessions. The program was engaging and let students utilise perseverance as they participated in tasks throughout the week.

It ended with an excursion to the RAAF base which was fun and engaging as we got to witness and see what life was like for people who work there. We also got to explore and learn about an aircraft.  We saw it up close and went inside to see the many cool features it incorporated. We finished our day off with a nice pizza lunch at Forty West Café and a prize distribution.

As a thank you and an Award for students who participated in the program, New Balance shoes and a Blue Edge certificate were awarded to the group of students. Students certainly enjoyed the shoes and the delicious lunch. They surely enjoyed the 8 week journey and look forward to Blue Edge coming again next year.

                  ANZAC DAY
Term two is now in full swing. The weather is definitely beginning to cool down as we approach the Winter months. A welcome relief from the Summer heat.
The end on last term saw a beautiful ANZAC Service commemorated by the RVSSC Community. It was heartwarming to have so many students, both ADF and non-ADF willing to participate in the service. The respect and pride was very evident in their manner.  A big Thank you to Flt Lt Luke Moran from 33 Sqn RAAF Base Amberley and Pastor Stephen Thomas who joined us for the commemoration.

                  DEFENCE CLUB
There has been no shortage of attendance by Defence students and their guests on Wednesdays at first break. New friendships are forming and old ones are being strengthened. This is terrific in developing social and emotional skills that inevitably extends out into the wider school and community.
                  ADF STUDENT SUPPORT
Some students are currently experiencing the challenges that come with long deployments. I have made myself available for an informal gathering up in the canteen area at second break on Wednesdays, to give students an opportunity to gather and chat about their experiences, share how they are coping, and also for them to offer advice to others who may not be dealing with the absences as well as they could be.
I also have a questionnaire that students can voluntarily fill out that allows them to write down what their experience of being an ADF kid is like. I have begun to hand these out. Over time, I am hoping to create a book that future students can read, fill of their thoughts, ideas and strategies for coping with a loved one's absence while dealing with the day to day dramas of being a teenager.
                  DEFENCE COMMUNITY ORGANISATION NAME CHANGE
On Thursday 1 July this year, the Defence Community Organisation (DCO) will change their name to Defence Member and Family Support (DMFS)
The new name will reflect the organisation's vision, with the aim of strengthening their position in the community as a Defence-led service. The name is all that changes. All services, support and area offices remain the same.
You will soon notice the name changes on fact sheets and social media channels as the name change rolls out. The Defence Family Hotline can be accessed 24/7 on 1800 624 608.
                  MOTHER'S DAY
We have just celebrated Mother's Day, and some lucky Mum's were treated to crafty cards made by their children at Defence Club. However you spent the day, I hope you were able to relax and enjoy the day in a way you deserved.

                  Dear parents/carers

What a great start to the term it has been.

During the past few weeks, I have met some of you during the parent/teacher evening. I was also able to attend Final Edge which was the celebration of the completion of the Blue Edge program that ran here at RVSSC in term 1. It was great to take the students with Mr Lynn to the RAAF base and then have a celebration lunch at Forty West. I want to thank Forty West for their generosity by donating the food during the Blue Edge program as well as the mentors who participated in it.

                  Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club will continue to operate on Tuesdays & Thursdays. I want to thank Central Valley Church for financially supporting it and for all of my volunteers who help out.

I also want to thank Westside Christian College for their generous contribution to this program. Over the past few weeks, they have donated games, a heap of frozen ham and cheese sandwiches and multiple sandwich presses. I look forward to seeing the relationship between the two schools grow.

                  Pastoral Care

As a school chaplain, my role is to provide emotional, spiritual and social support to the students and the wider school community. One of the ways I provide support is with one-on-one pastoral care conversations. If you would like me to provide support for your child, please email me at katki121@eq.edu.au
