School Newsletter (Week 1, Term 2)

Dear Parents & Carers,

I trust that over the Easter holiday break you were able to enjoy some much needed time to rest and relax after a rather eventful start to the year.  It is great to be back at school and we are looking forward to "getting back to business" in the classroom and hosting our special college events.

This Thursday, our College held our annual ANZAC day service and once again it was pleasing to see so many parents, grandparents and members of the defence community attend.  Commemorative services such as this remind me of the positive difference we can all make in our world and local community. For those who would like to attend a local ANZAC service on Monday the 25th April, a Community ANZAC Dawn service will be held at 5am in ANZAC place.  Further information is available in the newsletter on our website and Facebook.

Anzac_Silhouette.png   Anzac_RAAF.png

Another upcoming event that all members of the community are invited to attend is our annual Community Open Day which will be held on Saturday 7th May from 9am - 12pm.  This is a great opportunity for you and your extended friends/family to see the new and existing college buildings and facilities.  The P & C Association will have a food stall available and we will also be officially opening Bayliss Park at 10.30am.  This school park is in recognition of the original farm who operated here prior to the college being built.  Further information on the Community Open Day is available via our website, newsletter and Facebook page.

This term we welcome a number of new staff to our college and say goodbye to one of our foundation staff members, Angela Waugh.  Angela has been a foundation Head of Department (HOD) within the IT, Pathways and partnerships portfolio and has been instrumental in helping establish our college.  Angela has been successful in obtaining a leadership position with a local external organisation and I wish her all the best in this new role.  Mr James Dunn will be acting HOD within this role for Term 2, while we advertise for a replacement.  This term we also welcome Mr Daniel Pym as our new Deputy Principal, Mr Jedd Dawson (Science/Math teacher) , Mrs Sky Wang (Science/HPE) and Georgia Mallet (Teacher Aide) to our team.  As our enrolment numbers continue to grow we will be adding to our team throughout this year and I look forward to introducing all new staff to you as they come on board.

Once again, thank you for partnering with our college and I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events.

 Yours Sincerely,

NAPLAN Online
This year, between 10 and 20 May, our school will be doing NAPLAN online.
  • All Year 7 and Year 9 students particated in a Practice Test during the last week of Term 1.
  • NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning at school. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
  • NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance; however, students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
  • Read the NAPLAN information brochure for parents and carers. To see the format of the online tests, visit the public demonstration site.
  • See the below image for our College’s NAPLAN Test Window

NAPLAN is for everyone: help for students with disability sitting NAPLAN

  • NAPLAN is for everyone. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is committed to an inclusive testing process that allows all students to participate in the national assessment program. ACARA has recently released a series of videos where students, parents, carers and teachers talk about the sense of belonging and achievement students get from participating in NAPLAN with their peers.
  • NAPLAN’s disability adjustments enable an equivalent learner experience for students during testing and include, for example, magnification, alternative questions, keyboard accessibility, extra time, rest breaks and tailored testing.
  • This information can help schools, parents, carers and students to together identify reasonable adjustments required for individual students with disability to access NAPLAN. Students, parents and carers can also get hands-on experience with the format and adjustments of the test on the NAPLAN public demonstration site. The Guide for schools to assist students with disability to access NAPLAN  provides an overview of the process that teachers, in consultation with parents and carers, follow to assist students with disability.
  • NAPLAN results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and to monitor their students' progress over time against the national measure.

If you do not want your student to participate in NAPLAN online, please contact  epren3@eq.edu.au for details on how to withdraw your child from participating in the tests.

Intervention programs starting soon:
Reading Club:

Reading Club commencing soon.  Reading Club is a select group of students who will be working on improving their reading skills, supported by the school’s Speech Pathologist and a Teacher Aide.  The group will focus on building the foundation skills needed to develop fluent and accurate reading, as well as practicing using technology to help reduce any barriers that a reading difficulty may present.

Corrective Maths:

A select group of students will participate in a program called SRA Corrective Mathematics.  The purpose of the program is to provide intensive small-group instruction in order to develop the skills, strategies, automaticity, accuracy, and key understanding of Addition and Subtraction.

It maximises academic engagement by moving lessons along in a rapid manner with constant interchange between teacher and students. The SRA Corrective Mathematics curriculum provides practice with immediate feedback. Activities focus on addition and subtraction facts, operation of addition and subtraction, reading and writing numbers, column addition and subtraction, addition and subtraction with carrying and borrowing and solving story problems with distracters.

The lessons will be conducted for thirty minutes, two times per week during class time.

UPDATE: Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

We are currently in the data collection phase of the NCCD. Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

A warm welcome back to students and families from the English, Humanities and Languages faculty.

Term 2 is always a notoriously busy term. This term our Year 7’s and 9’s will participate in NAPLAN, while our Year 10’s will have their first ever exam block.

This term in English, the majority of our students will be studying narratives. Parents and caregivers can support their children by having conversations about the way’s stories are constructed. This can include the story lines in T.V programs and movies, not just in novels. Year 10 Extension English students will be studying War Poetry, and the ways literature has both reflected and changed the values, attitudes and beliefs of society across times of war and peace.

In Humanities this term, students will switch to the study of History. Year 7’s will be studying Ancient Egypt, while our year 8’s will be studying Medieval times. To coincide with ANZAC Day, our year 9’s will study World War 1 this term. Our year 10 History students will be looking at modern history starting with the civil rights movement. Legal Studies students will be examining the role of the law in issues relating to technology.

In Japanese, our year 8 students will be visiting the Nerima Garden’s this term as well as getting the opportunity to connect digitally with Sammu City Matsuo Junior High School in Japan. These two opportunities are an excellent way for our students to put into practise their speaking and listening skills.

We look forward to working with you and your children again this term.

      Jasmine Diesing

Head Of Department - English Humanities & Languages

Welcome back to the start of Term 2! I hope that you and your family had a restful and enjoyable Easter break. Reflecting on Term 1, I want to reiterate how proud we are as a College of all of our students. Term 1 had so many unforeseen interruptions and all of our students took it in their stride and still managed to engage with learning. The majority of Term 1 mathematics results should now be live on Daymap for you to view as teachers have now had time to mark and moderate all assessments. We encourage you to review these results with your child and set some goals for their academic achievements as they head into Term 2.

Term 2 will be a busy one for our students in mathematics as they have two pieces of assessment to complete across the term. I have included a table below with a brief overview of these tasks and the expected due date. Welcome back to Term 2 to all students and families.

As we return to the classroom in term 2, it is important for students to review the goals they set in term 1, check their progress and then adjust their goals and strategies accordingly. James Clear in his book Atomic Habits says “we won’t rise to the level or our goal, but rather fall to the level of our system”. It is important that as students review and set new goals that they look at the strategies they put in place to help them achieve these goals. As always, students will be supported by our amazing staff to reach their potential and encourage them with their goals throughout the term.

This term our students will continue to connect the learning that occurs within the science classroom to their lives outside of school and we encourage them to be critical and creative thinkers by utilising the inquiry skills they learn.

Our year 7 students begin to look at Biology and the science of classification when organising living things and develop the skills required for an exam. Year 8 classes build upon their pre-existing knowledge of Chemistry to understand how the physical and chemical properties of materials are linked to their chemical structure. The year 9 students investigate the transfer of energy within Physics and explore how we can utilise our science knowledge when developing a heat shield in order to limit the amount of energy transferred within a system.

The year 10 students continue on their varied pathways with both the Biology/Psychology class and Physics/Chemistry classes continuing on their semester units while the core science class finishes off investigating the role of science in understanding climate change and writing a research report addressing a chosen claim. The foundation class has started their new unit this term and begin to look at chemical reactions and how these are used within our daily lives and how factors such as temperature and surface area can change the speed of these reactions.

We look forward to another exciting term and wish all our students the best as they get back in to the learning routines within all their classes.

            Extra-curricular Sport

As we grow as a school, our sports program will continue to develop as well. This year we are entering two new competitions in Term: 2

            • Vicki Wilson Cup is a netball tournament taking place on Wednesday the 1st of June. Students are currently trialling for a position on this team with Mr Coles and Ms Stiles. Training takes place Tuesday mornings from 7am – 8am.
            • Street-smart Tournament is an AFL tournament being held on Tuesday 7th of June. Students are currently training for this event with Ms Nugent and Miss McKendry on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3pm - 4.30pm. We are still seeking players for this event so please come along to training. If we do not get enough players by Week 2 the team will be cancelled.

It is really important that students are attending all training sessions sent out to them by their coaches. Before school training takes place generally between 7am and 8am and afternoon training sessions take place from 3pm – 4:30pm. If a student is unable to make a training session they are expected to email their coach or Mr Clifford 12 hours prior to the training session.

            Ripley Athlete Development Program (RAD)

RAD is continuing this term on the oval. Students will be beginning to use the newly created gym from Week 2 and will have a focus on athletics training. Personalised training will continue if students aren’t interested in athletics.

            Sports Co-ordination

This week, RVSSC commemorated ANZAC Day with an all school ANZAC Commemoration assembly.  Our service was attended by students, staff and parents; also in attendance was Australian Army Chaplain Padre Stephen Thomas, Flying Officer Ray Brown, Piper Adam Regnart and representatives from Federal, State and Local government and Defence Families.

RVSSC Students (Defence and Civilian), Army/Air Force/Navy Cadets, and School Captains also participated in our service, laying wreaths, delivering the Ode, raising the flag, singing the National Anthems of New Zealand and Australia, and playing the Last Post. The pride and dignity that all of our students displayed during the service was very obvious and it is clear that the Legacy of our ANZACs is in safe hands with the next generation.

Notable mention must be given to the speech delivered by Flying Officer Ray Brown, who spoke of the resilience and mateship of the Anzac's and how their legacy of that spirit should inspire all of us to become more resilient to the troubles we will encounter in life, and to also value and support those who are important to each of us.

            Defence Member and Family Support

Welcome back to another term. I trust you had an enjoyable Easter break. As a Chaplain I am here to support your child throughout the ups and downs of life. One of the ways I provide support is with one-on-one pastoral care conversations. If you would like me to provide support for your child or if you have any questions or concerns yourself, please email me at katki121@eq.edu.au

Over the next term I will be in planning for a range of different programs and initiatives. These will include Love Bites (along with the YSC) mentoring program, Rock & Water, Transition Videos. More information will be given out as the term progresses so keep an eye out for them.

            Easter Glow Sticks

At the end of last term the P&C held an Easter movie night here on the school grounds. I want to thank those who allowed their child to come and help out on the night.

            Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club, one of the extra-curricular programs of the school is starting up next Tuesday. Breakfast Club will operate on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:15-8:45 am. This is an excellent way for the students to engage with one another over food or milo and doesn't cost them anything. If you want to volunteer for this, please feel free to email me.

            Mentoring Program

A program that the Chaplaincy Service is looking to start up this year is the mentoring program. The mentoring program will include community people who will spend 1 hour a week, 1 on 1 with a student within our community in an open space on the college grounds. The mentor is a life mentor and will undergo child safety training by the College as well as SU. The mentor must be over 21 years of age and have a blue card to participate.

This is a great way for the wider Ripley Community to be involved with the college and to help support students. If you want to be a mentor or if your child is someone who you think would benefit from this program, please contact me.

            Chaplaincy Committee

The Local Chaplaincy Committee is the supporting and guiding body behind the Chaplaincy Service helping shape it to meet the wellbeing of the school community here at RVSSC. If you would like to attend and be a part of the committee, we have our next meeting on Thursday the 19th of May at 4 pm at the Ripley Valley State School.

I am looking forward to an exciting term ahead.

            Take care

Your child, our student. One team.

We all deserve respectful, safe and non-violent environments, so aggression and harassment of any kind—physical, verbal or otherwise—isn't acceptable.

When you interact with school staff, remember we're all on the same team to support your child. We all have your child's best interests at heart, and the best way to achieve a positive learning experience is to work together.
