Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome back to Term 3 and what is shaping to be a very full schedule within our College calendar over the next few months. A very special welcome to our new students and families who have enrolled with us this term having moved from other schools and interstate. I trust you are settling in and becoming active members of our school community as we work together to achieve excellence.
This term a number of new staff have joined our College community and I welcome Ms Jaymie Parish (English/Humanities teacher), Ms Candice Vidotto (Art teacher), Ms Taletha Champs (English/Humanities teacher), Ms Christie McKendry (Math/Science/HPE teacher), Ms Rachael Pratt (Administration Officer) and Mr Paul McAully (Computer Systems Administrator). Over the coming weeks we will be introducing you to our new staff on our social media platforms so you can get to know them better.
This term a significant focus for our year 8 and 9 students/parents is on subject selections, and in the case of year 9 students our senior schooling pathways. Ms Angela Waugh has been leading this work and over the coming weeks/months parents and students will be given the opportunity to attend various information sessions to allow parents and students the best opportunity to understand these choices, changes and future pathway possibilities. I encourage all parents/students to attend these events which will be promoted via Facebook/school media as we prepare for the start of senior schooling in year 10 next year.
In other exciting news, Ripley Valley State Secondary College was one of only 120 schools selected across the state to offer an after school homework club for students. All students are able to attend the homework club in Building CG.09 on Tuesday and/or Thursday afternoons from 2.45-4.15pm. A light snack will be provided for those who attend and further details are provided in our newsletter and on our school Facebook/website.
As our College continues to grow, so too does our buildings and facilities. The current Stage 2 works are on track to be completed by the end of 2021 and ready for student use in 2022. It is exciting to see the recent building progress and we plan on hosting another College Open Day in early 2022 to showcase these new facilities to our school and wider community.
Last but not least, the final items for our senior school uniform have arrived and are on display at school. I would like to thank the P & C, students and school community for their input and involvement in this process and we look forward to our year 10 students wearing the new formal/senior uniform in 2022.
I would also like to encourage all parents/adults to support and book tickets to attend our inaugural P & C Comedy for a Cause fundraising night. All proceeds made from this event will come back to the P & C to enhance our ever-expanding school learning environment from student outdoor seating, football/soccer posts on the oval and shade. The comedy night will feature national comedians and will be a good, clean night of fun. Food and drinks will be available for purchase on the night and due to the service of alcohol, if desired, the P & C will promote this as an 18+ age limit event.
If you want further information, or to become involved in our P & C Association please email: PandC@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au
Once again, thank you for partnering with us as we work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for your child.
Yours sincerely,
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Wednesday 28th July at the College. Directional signs will be in place to direct all visitors to the interview venue in F Block (this is our two storey classroom building).
In order to ensure COVID Safe Practices are adhered to, all parents/carers will be required to sign in upon entry to the room and hand sanitiser will be available. Physical distancing measures will be in place between adults during interviews, and we ask that you respect current government requirements when moving between interviews and around the College.
Bookings are linked to your student's Semester 2 timetable. If you require a booking with a Semester 1 teacher, please contact the relevant teacher directly via Daymap message, email or phone.
Students are encouraged to join their parents/carers for these interviews to discuss Semester 1 achievements and Semester 2 goals. Parent/Teacher Interviews are also a great opportunity to discuss Year 9 subject offerings with the specialist teachers.
If you are unable to attend Parent/Teacher Interviews or your child's teachers are booked out, phone interviews are available from Monday 26th - Friday 30th July. These can be arranged directly with relevant teachers. Please contact the College via phone or email to be connected with your child's teachers.
Bookings can be placed via the Daymap Parent Connect Portal for face-to-face interviews, however, teachers now have limited availability. If you are experiencing any technical issues please contact tech@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au for assistance.

This term we would like to welcome two new staff members to our English and Humanities team; Miss Champs and Miss Parish. We are excited to have such experienced and enthusiastic staff joining our team.
As well as the changes to electives this semester, there have been a number of changes to English timetables as a result of staff leaving, and new staff beginning. These changes have been made to ensure we are making the most of the expertise and experience in the English and Humanities faculties. If you have any concerns regarding changes, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or myself.
We are continuing to promote reading this term with RVSSC participating as a school in The Premier’s Reading Challenge. Our school has access to the online library SORA, where students can borrow digital novels, graphic novels and non-fiction texts in the form of digital books, as well as audio books. Participating in The Premier’s Reading Challenge can include reading, or being read to, alone, in pairs or groups, or whole classes. Please encourage your children to read and make note of the titles they read so that they can be counted in our school reading tally.

ART
Year Eight Art students will be having endless fun experimenting with ephemeral art this term. In order to play with line, form, shape and pattern found in natural objects, we've been busy collecting leaves, seeds, seedpods, sticks, stackablee stones and feathers.
If you have any interesting natural items in your backyard for our collection, we'd love to have them! Not only are we collecting leaves, seeds, seedpods, sticks, stackablee stones and feathers, we are also collecting bottle caps, ring pulls and any multiples of flat, coloured plastic items for a special 'end of unit' project in week 10. We have a special box in administration for donation drop offs.
DANCE & DRAMA
Welcome back to term 3. As the year progresses we have now picked up our second round of classes who are studying drama this year. There has been an exciting start to the week as students are trying out these subjects for the first time. Our year 7 dancers have started learning their routine and our year 8 drama students have been participating in lots of team building games. Year 9 drama elective is on board this semester for the first time ever at RVSSC. Students are getting straight into working on their script writing tasks.
In our year 7 Dance unit, Just Dance, we will be focusing on introducing students to Dance in High School through the genre of Popular Dance.
In year 8 Drama we will be looking at Children’s Theatre in the unit Child’s play. Students will have opportunities to respond to and create their own Drama works.
This semester year 9 Drama students will be studying Daytime Soaps. They will be creating their own Soap Opera as well as responding to work of others.
All Dance and Drama students are required to perform as a part of their units. Performance maybe new for many of our students but we can assure you that we work with the students to build up their confidence to ensure that they are ready and confident to perform on assessment day.
DANCE SQUAD
Our enthusiastic team of dancers have been straight back into training this week. We finished off term 2 with a performance of our contemporary routine on assembly during week 10. The team is currently working hard on their Hip Hop routine and look forward to sharing it with the community.

Introducing Janet Ingram – Guidance Officer
I have worked as a Guidance Officer for over six years in Central Queensland and the Southeast Region and I have been privileged to work with many students and their families. I love being able to help students to reach their potential by identifying barriers to success and working together to overcome the challenges they face each day at school. Helping young people become the best versions of themselves by overcoming challenges and setbacks (perceived and real) is central to my practice. It is my reason for getting up in the morning.
Students often ask me what kind of things can they talk to a Guidance Officer about. I reply,” Anything that is getting in the way of your learning right now.” Students often go to their peers for advice but unfortunately young people do not have the life skills to advise on complex issues. A Guidance Officer is an objective adult who can offer other perspectives in a confidential setting and provide support by addressing educational barriers, so the student can get on with the business of learning and shaping their futures.
Being a Guidance Officer in the secondary phase of learning gives me the opportunity to advise students in selecting university pathways and further training or work. Nothing is more satisfying than watching a student end their schooling knowing what work/study will be meaningful for them, and how they will contribute positively to society.
Guidance Officers are registered and experienced teachers with a Masters Degree in Guidance Counselling. This unique expertise enables us to work in schools and help all students in the areas of academic achievement, social, personal and career development. Guidance Officers do not have the qualifications to diagnose mental health disorders, but we can suspect, in which case I encourage further support from external providers (psychologists) who can provide a deeper and more consistent treatment than I can provide at school. If your child does see a psychologist my work with them does not end. I work collaboratively with teachers, parents and external agencies to negotiate personalised plans which support students with their mental health needs at school.
I am located in the administration building and appointments can be made through the main office or by emailing me directly on email jingr34@eqeduu.au.
Self Confidence – a valuable asset for adolescents
“You have to be the best version of yourself and if that means you have to be a bit self-promoting then it’s okay. It really is. Because who is going to believe in you more than yourself?” ReeceWitherspoonn, actress.
How much is your confidence worth? In my opinion, it is highly valuable. Confident people work better under stress and are better positioned to influence others, which in turn creates greater life satisfaction. Frequently in my work as a Guidance Officer I encounter students with confidence issues which hold them back from attaining what they want from school, friendships and their pursuits. Parents, teachers and coaches are in a prime position to help so I have attached a helpful guide below.
How Confidence Develops
For most children school means spending more time on learning and less on ‘play’. It also means more expectations of them – from parents, carers, teaching staff and of themselves. Children typically start out with high expectations. When they see how well they do things compared to others, their view of their own abilities often changes. They learn that they are good at some things and not so good at others. They also see how others respond to what they do. These things influence their confidence in their abilities and influence how willing they are to have a go in situations where they feel unsure.
How Parents and Carers Can Help
Confidence improves through building on small successes. Parents, carers (and teaching staff) can help by:
- explaining that skills develop with consistent practice over time.
- encouraging persistence when outcomes are not achieved straight away
- praising effort, persistence and improvement
- making sure that goals are achievable by breaking down large tasks or responsibilities into small steps
- encouraging your adolescent to have a go and valuing individual improvement rather than comparing to others
- Encouraging confident body language such as sitting or walking into a room with upright shoulders. The mind listens to the body so you will feel more confident. Other people respond positively to outward signs of confidence.
Confident Thinking
“The most important words you hear shape you, but the most important words you will ever hear in your entire life are the words you say to yourself...Focus only on what you want to move towards and accomplish, never on the opposite, which is what you want to leave behind...Whatever we focus on we move towards...” Marissa Peer, psychologist.
Particular ways of thinking are very important for building confidence. Helpful ways of thinking include:
- believing that, if you try, you can succeed. We tell the mind what we want it to do.
- finding positive ways to cope with failure and being prepared to give it another go
- enjoying learning for its own sake by competing with your own performance rather than that of others.
Dealing with Disappointment
Everybody fails to achieve their goals sometimes. Parents, carers and teaching staff can help by:
- Acknowledging feelings, and respond sympathetically and with encouragement e.g. “You sound disappointed, but at least you had a go.”
- Helping kids focus on what they can change to make things better, rather than thinking that the situation is unchangeable or that there is something wrong with them, e.g., “What can you try that might make that work better next time?”
- Challenging words like ‘I can’t’ or ‘I’m a failure’, and letting them know that ‘giving up’ may not help them reach their goal. Instead offer to work out a plan together and ask them to contribute ideas. Evaluate what is realistic and achievable in the time frame.
Let them know you believe in them, support them with their goals and remind them of what they have achieved to date.
The Hurting Game by Brainstorm Productions.
The Hurting Game is a wellbeing and anti-bullying program. It’s a funny and engaging live performance for high school students that provides strategies for resilience, help seeking, online safety and positive relationships
The Hurting Game will be performed to a live audience of around 100 students on Friday 23rd July during Period 4. Students elected to go and have been invoiced. Please check that you have paid to avoid disappointment.
2022 Harding Miller Scholarship Applications Open from 15th July until 15th September What is the Harding Miller Education Foundation Scholarship?
