Maths, Science & HPE
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all back for Term 3. We are very excited to welcome Christy McKendry to our teaching team across Maths, Science and HPE. Within my first newsletter article of the term, I just wanted to let you all know what content your child will be learning this term across Maths, Science and HPE.
Maths
Year 7 |
Number & Algebra Students will be introduced to Algebra this term and the idea of representing variables with numbers. This is often a unit that students are apprehensive to start as the big A word (Algebra) due to their perception that algebra has to be difficult. We are working hard as a teaching team to ensure that we step this concept out into manageable chunks to best support their understanding. Our aim is to make sure that our students finish this unit feeling confident to tackle further algebra concepts in Y8-12.
Students will use index notation, perfect squares and factor trees to represent numbers. They will connect numbers and variables. Students will solve simple linear equations.
Assessment – Week 8 Exam |
Year 8 |
Number & Algebra Students will develop their understanding of index laws, expanding and factorising algebraic expressions, solving linear equations and graphing linear equations.
Assessment – Week 8 Exam |
Year 9 |
Algebra & Financial Mathematics Students will develop their understanding of index laws, scientific notation and expanding binomial expressions. Students will be introduced to the concept of Simple Interest and making financial decisions based off mathematical calculations.
Assessment – Week 6 Exam |
If you child is struggling with a Mathematical concept this term, I encourage you to access Khan Academy resources with your child. This is a free online resource that has a significant number of educational videos and other information to support your child to better understand algebra concepts.
Science
Year 7 |
Physics – Motion and Forces Students will investigate the relationship between force and motion. This includes understanding the basic laws of motion, and how simple machines make work easier.
Assessment – Experimental Investigation Conducted in class, over 8 lessons |
Year 8 |
Physics – Moving Energy Students will identify different forms of energy and describe how energy transfers and transformations cause change in simple systems. Students will get to design a modification on a Rube Goldberg Machine. Students absolutely love getting to create these Rube Goldberg Machines and we are so excited to see what they come up with.
Assessment – Experimental Investigation Conducted in class over 3 weeks (includes some group work components) |
Year 9 |
Biology – Impacts on Biodiversity Students will explain chemical processes and natural radioactivity in terms of atoms and energy transfers. They will describe examples of important chemical reactions. Students will have the chance to create an instant cold pack and discuss the chemical reactions as part of this.
Assessment – Experimental Investigation Conducted from Week 4 – Week 7. |
HPE
Year 7 |
Personal Identify Students will work towards developing a sense of personal identity. They will discuss how their development is influenced by puberty and other life factors.
Assessment – Week 8 Exam
Practical component – Cultural Games |
Year 8 |
Sports Nutrition Students will investigate sports nutrition concepts in relation to an adolescent athlete. Students will revise the concepts of food groups, well-balanced diets, water consumption and more.
Assessment – Multimodal Presentation Due Week 9
Practical component – European Handball |
Year 9 |
Physical Activity for Life Students will examine the role physical activity, outdoor recreation and sport play in the lives of Australians and investigate how this has changed over time. They will plan, implement and critique strategies to enhance health, safety and wellbeing of their communities. Students will also design, implement and evaluate personalised plans for improving or maintaining their own and others’ physical activity and fitness levels.
Assessment – Research Investigation Report Due Week 7, Term 3 |
