Dear Parents/Carers,
It was an absolute pleasure last week to attend our 3rd Annual Awards evening and recognise the outstanding academic, sporting and cultural achievements of our students for 2022. It was equally exciting to be able to announce our new Junior College Captains; Ellie Eastell and Gowri Menon, and our senior leaders for 2023. Each year, our college continues to mature and excel far beyond our expectations. The hard work, perseverance and dedication of our staff, students and families all contribute to fulfilling our college motto of "Achieving Excellence Together".
This Friday I also look forward to celebrating the great work of our performing arts team as we host our annual Showcase event in the Raptordome. The level of skill and professionalism demonstrated by our students in dance, drama, music, and art is worth celebrating and I look forward to this entertaining event once again.
As the year quickly draws to an end, our final planning and preparation for the start of the 2023 school year is well and truly under way. Next year we anticipate over 800 students in years 7 - 11 and with this additional growth planning is under way for the construction of our next building stage in commencing in 2023. Design plans are currently being finalised for the construction of our performing arts centre and additional classrooms for the stage 3 works. This vital infrastructure project will be a welcome addition to our college when it is completed in 2024. Further details and architectural plans will be shared with the college community when they are finalised in the near future.
As the countdown to the end of the school year draws near I want to thank our many P & C members and school parents for your continued engagement in our college. I am grateful to the many committed and active parents that form our school community who genuinely wants to work with the college to enhance the educational outcomes for our young people. Once again thank you for your partnership with us and I look forward to seeing you at one of the many school events before the end of the school year.
Yours Sincerely,
Emily Prenzler

RVSSC Student Page
A reminder to check out the RVSSC Student Page. Assessment is ramping up again, so it is a great time to remind ourselves of the tips and tricks to study well, and achieve our best!
The Student Toolkit has lots of tips and resources to support students with:
- How they learn
- How to ask for help
- Positive affirmations about learning
- How to use Learning Tools through Microsoft software
- Links for extra support and on-line tutoring.
Children, just like adults, experience feelings as they anticipate or react to transitions. Sometimes children will engage in challenging behaviours as a result of this anticipation. Sometimes they will react excited and others may become anxious and over-whelmed. Every feeling is valid. That is why it is so important that we support our young people, identify their feelings and build resilience in times of transition.
Parents can promote successful transitions by:
- checking in with their child about their feelings
- communicating with the school if they are concerned
- creating a predictable routine for school
- helping their child/ren feel safe and secure during these times.

YEAR 10 EXAM BLOCK
With the start of November, we have now only a few short weeks left with our year 10 students before they start their exams and then finish school for the year. Year 10 exam block will be held from Monday 21st to Thursday 24th November and all year 10 students have received their exam timetable by email.
To help assist students and ensure that the exam block runs smoothly, we ask that parents please take note of the following information:
- Year 10 students are only required to attend school for scheduled exams or VET catch up sessions. Students must arrive at the beginning of the exam session and are to wear correct uniform.
- When required for a scheduled exam session, students must remain in the designated exam room for the entire scheduled session with their teacher.
- Year 10 students at school at any time other than an exam session or lunch break, you will be working in the designated study classroom. The study room is a supervised room and a roll will be marked each lesson. The expectation is that students work quietly and independently.
- Any VET students with outstanding modules of work will be required to attend VET catch up sessions during the exam block. Students will be required to attend these sessions until all required work is completed.
Available Job Opportunities
Lately there have been many job opportunities advertised to students through their email and our Senior Schooling website (Vacancies and Opportunities). If your child is interested in working casually make sure they keep their eyes out for these notifications.
If they need support in writing a resume /cover letter please advise your child to see Mrs George (Industry Liaison Officer) in the Careers Hub which is located in the Library.
USI (Unique Student Identifiers)
Just a reminder for any students entering year 10 or 11 in 2023 to please create your USI and provide it to the school to be added to your profile.
These can be easily created at www.usi.gov.au and then can forward the USI to VET@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au.

THIRD PARTY WEBSITE - PERMISSION FORMS
Over the next few weeks parents will begin to receive emails regarding the school use of Third Party Websites. This email will contain a link for the completion of an online survey providing consent for your child/ren to use Third Party Websites as part of their schooling. Each of these websites has been checked by both Education Queensland and the Technology team at Ripley Valley State Secondary College and has been deemed safe for students to use. However, in many cases these sites require students to register as a user and as such we request your consent for this to occur.
MICROSOFT ONE DRIVE – BACKING UP FILES
A common occurrence when students bring in their devices for repair is to hear that their files haven’t been backed to anywhere other than the laptop hard drive. While this isn’t a problem in itself, it becomes an issue if the hard drive is corrupted as all files are then lost. An easy way for student to avoid this problem is to use Microsoft One Drive to back up their files and save them to the cloud as well as on their laptop. For more information on how to sync your device to back up to the cloud please follow the link to Microsoft’s support guide.

We are just about half way through term 4, and that means students are beginning to transition from learning new concepts, to applying their skills. Traditionally, this is a time that triggers stress and leads to avoidance strategies. In English, students are well into their text study – time away from classes will have a significant impact on their ability to keep up. Attendance and participation are keys to success. Starting from next week, the English Homework Club will be running during first break for students who need support. This could look like catching up on missed lesson including viewing their film/documentary, finalising comprehension activities, and preparing editing their drafts.
This Term 8E have been studying speculative fiction. For their introduction to the science fiction genre, Ms Marks created a futuristic atmosphere complete with laser lights and space inspired music. After exploring the genre conventions and sharing their experiences with sci-fi texts, students enjoyed the opportunity to create their own alien for a brain break, and to discuss what could be out there in the far depths of space.
This week, our Year 9 Geography class taste tested some ‘foods of the future’. Sampling cheese and bacon flavoured dehydrated meal worms and sour cream and chives flavoured dehydrated crickets. Our Year 9 Geography class have been investigating the environmental impacts of traditional farming and exploring the viable alternatives, including meal worms. Eating meal worms may sound horrifying but they can actually be good for both you and the environment. New studies suggest mealworms are a viable and environmentally friendly substitute for traditional livestock offerings. Eaten in their larval forms, the worms have very high protein levels making them a feasible replacement for products such as chicken, pork, and beef. The crickets were various flavours, and we even had Mr Lynn visit us to sample some of these delicious delicacies!
Recently our Year 7 Japanese class enjoyed a tea ceremony at Nerima Gardens, Ipswich. It is a choreographic ritual of preparing and serving Japanese green tea, called Matcha, together with traditional Japanese sweets to balance with the bitter taste of the tea.
Preparing tea in this ceremony means pouring all one's attention into the predefined movements. The whole process is not about drinking tea, but is about aesthetics, preparing a bowl of tea from one's heart. The host of the ceremony always considers the guests with every movement and gesture. Our students were grateful for the opportunity to attend so close to Ripley!

The end of the year is fast approaching, which means so is the busy assessment period for our students. Some important reminders from the math faculty:
- Mathematics tutoring is available every Tuesday 1st break and Thursday 2nd break in CG01.
- Scientific calculators - every student should bring their own scientific calculator to every single maths lesson. This is so they can become familiar with the necessary functions before the exam. They will use a scientific calculator in every year level so these won't go to waste.
- Resources - an increasing number of students are arriving to classes without notebooks, charged laptops and general stationary. Please remind your child/ren that they should come prepared to every lesson to minimise disruption and boost their engagement. Note-taking and worked examples is also essential to have this information readily available for study/revision.

As we head into the middle of Term 4, our students have been busy working through their science content, and in the next couple of weeks we will see students begin to start working on assessment.
Year 7 students have been learning about the interactions between the Sun, Moon and Earth, and how these interactions affect tides, seasons, and climate. They have also learnt about the phases of the moon, as well as lunar and solar eclipses, with many viewing the partial lunar eclipse which occurred last week. Students have been developing their research and inquiry skills, with multiple lessons dedicated to practising these skills ready for their assessment later in the term, as well as to be extended upon in years 8-10.
Our year 8 students began the term learning about animal and plant cells, and how to tell them apart, with many classes making edible models made of lollies. As the term progressed, students started to investigate specialist cells and organs in the human body, leading up to the reproductive cycle of humans, which they are currently studying. At all times, this unit is in alignment with the demands of the Australia Curriculum, and will be taught scientifically. As educators, cultural understanding and sensitivity is held with upmost importance.
The year 9 students have been investigating the Earth’s structure by delving into the different layers of Earth, Continental drift and Pangaea, Tectonic plates, Greenhouse gases and Climate. As well as this, classes have also investigated natural disasters by attempting to create buildings which can withstand an earthquake (using Jelly), and creating volcanos with large eruptions. Over the next few weeks, students will start to get ready for their assessment in week 8.
The year 10 students continue on their varied pathways in this shorter term with both the Psychology and Chemistry classes continuing their semester units, both of which will sit an exam in week 8 block exams. Our Core science classes have been investigating motion, and calculating speed, velocity, and acceleration, and will also finish the term with an exam. The foundation class has been working on their Science inquiry skills, modelled around the senior Science in Practise subject. Students have explored concepts such as The Big Bang and Evolution, and as part of their assessment, will deliver a multi modal display about their scientific theory of choice.
All assessment information can be found within Daymap and it is important to remind students that all assessments should be uploaded to Daymap as well. If, for any reason, your student needs to apply for an extension, this should be done online, and more information can be found in their student diary or on the College SharePoint page.
If you ever have any questions around what is happening within your child’s Science class, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me.

Dance
7 Dance
Year 7 Dance Students have recently completed their performance task. Students gained confidence in their performance skills and took the stage with great technical and expressive skills! They have now started their final task for the year, choreography. Students will take on the challenge of creating their own dance performance as they "dance through the ages". They will apply their knowledge of the Elements of Dance and cleverly use choreographic devices as they work in groups to finish their master piece.
9 Dance
Year 9 Dance students have recently submitted their blog post and are happily waving goodbye their theory unit. Students will take on the challenge of creating their own dance performance with a Musical mash up. They will apply their knowledge of the Elements of Dance and cleverly use choreographic devices to individually choreograph their section before they take on the role of the teacher to take turns teaching their group members.
10 Dance
Year 10 Dance students have recently submitted their choreography task. Students were required to portray their chosen social issue in their piece. Most students were brave and opted to do this task as a solo! The creativity behind their ideas and communication of their social issue were both innovate and thought provoking.
The year 10's are now moving onto their final task for the year. The students will be revising all of their knowledge of dance theory so that they can prepare to respond to an unseen dance works in exam conditions. This task is preparing students for Senior Dance in year 11 and 12.
Dance Squad
Dance Squad recently performed their hit routine "Nicest Kids in Town" at RVSSC's awards night. This is sadly one of their final performances of the year as we wrap up the year with a fabulous night at Showcase! Congratulations to our dancers on an astounding year with many triumphs, such as their first eisteddfod! Keep an eye on notices as we announce the date for Dance auditions as these will be held this year! We cannot wait to see you all.
Drama
8 Drama
This term, drama students have steeped into the role of a Director. Learning how to annotate scripts with movement and expression as well as design costumes and scenery appropriate for the chosen text. Students have also been considering the importance of equality and eliminating unintentional racism as they explore theme of reconciliation within the Australian play text, 'Honey Spot'. This has really encouraged students to reflect on their behaviours and think about how this message can be shared through a theatrical format.
9 Drama
Remember Mr. Bean? The Three Stooges? Did you know that still style of slap stick comedy originated in the Italian Renaissance era and came from a theatrical style named Commedia Dell Arte. Year 9 students have been stepping right out of their comfort zone to become the Stock Characters from the Commedia style and improvise scenario's using the convention of 'Lazzi' which is a form of comedy. Students are also making comparisons of the historic style and new age sitcoms such as Big Bang Theory, Friends, How I met Your Mother and more.
10 Drama
Year 10 Drama students were immersed in the style of Australian Gothic Theatre. Engaging in a historically-set process drama, students worked in an ensemble to improvise and solve clues, all while remaining in role. There were even some teacher cameo roles! It was wonderful to see students working together and enjoying themselves as they learned about a new style in a practical way.
Dance Troupe
Drama Troupe have been gearing up to present some snippets of their work at the Arts Showcase. Ivy Shambitt and The Sound Machine is story of dark secrets, mysterious undergoing's, magic and exposing the truth no matter how deep it is buried. Students are building on their confidence, rehearsing their dialogue and looking forward to stepping into the spotlight.
Music
Vocal
Our Vocal ensemble has been training and practising all year, and are performing together a beautiful song “Little Voice”. Two of the vocalists are also performing a solo piece, which for both will be their first time performing to a large audience. We wish them luck.
Showcase!
Our annual Showcase event is on next week! Please come along and support our performing arts students as they share their work from Dance, Drama and Music. Tickets are currently sold out but we will be offering free standing room at the back so please come along if you haven't yet got your ticket! Doors open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start. Our P&C will be selling food at interval from the kiosk at the back of the hall.

We are halfway through the Term and the light at the end of the tunnel is near! Our students have been working hard in their theoretical and practical lessons in HPE and it is mostly important to know that our students are beginning to transition into their assessment phase for this term. However, some of are students have been completing assessment in an ongoing nature.
Year 7 HPE students have begun investigating food choices within the current Ripley Valley SSC tuckshop menu and have proposed one item to replace. This has seen them collect primary data from other Year 7 students and analyse this data by finding main points or elements, similaries or differences through thoughts on contributions of other students.
Year 8 students have been developing and presenting their Fitness Techniques/Fitness Testing during theory and practical lessons. The focus for this assessment was to develop health & skill related fitness components through physical activity. More specifically students have been developing fitness workouts that they have delivered to their peers. Students have been provided feedback by their peers on how to further improve their fitness workouts and to implement these within their assessment.
Year 9 students have been engaged in Heath detriments and Netball. Specifically in theory students have been investigating the five aspects of health (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social) and how students at Ripley Valley SSC engage with each aspect. Students will have also developed a strategy and practice to improve their own, others and the communities health, safety and wellbeing.
Year 9 HSE students have engaged in Badminton and Motor Learning. Students have been identifying where they sit in Fitt's Posners Model of Motor Learning. Their assessment this term has them identifying errors in their sub-routines and how specific rate limiters effect their Badminton performance. They then have identified a constraint and practice method to implement to improve their Badmin performance. Students are specifically finding it difficult to explain why their brain gets them to perform specific motor programs and how a breakdown in a specific sub-routine can effect the exection of their chosen motor program.
Year 10 Health students have been exploing activities that promote positive mental health. Students have discussed the five aspects of holistic health and dimensions of wellness, additionally the building blocks of mental health. The Health classes have examined facotrs that contribute to mental health problems and have identified ways to maintain positive mental health. The Health students have been analysing a whole lot of statistics of Youth Mental Health through the Young Minds Matter Survey.
Year 10 Sport and Recreation students have been engaged in learning experiences to develop their understanding and skills in Orienteering. In Week 8, they will be required to demonstrate and refine there Orienteering skills in a range of physical activity contexts in a theoretical and practical exam.
We look forward to finalising this Term with all of our HPE students and wish our families an exciting Christmas break.

ABOUTQMHW
Queensland Mental Health Week QMHW) is an annual awareness initiative that promotes individual and community mental health and well-being, boosts awareness of mental illness, and celebrates the contribution of the mental health and community sectors.
Each year, people across Queensland come together during QMHW through hundreds of local events, conversations and activities.
QMHW takes place in the week of World Mental Health Day in October.
This year we were honoured to be short-listed for theQMHW Achievement Awards – Schools award (Primary and Secondary).
httpss:/wwwwopenmindssorgg.au/achievement-awards
During QMHW we held a well-being expo and hosted a dozen external providers who work in the well-being and mental health sectors. USQ Phoenix Radio broadcast live and interviewed staff on the Excellence programs, GP in schools pilot program and e-sports. Link to the radio show is below. https:/cmss.megaphone.fm/channel/XARIA6198114748?selected=XARIA7542825300
As part of QMHW celebrations presenters from LIVIN and headspace were invited to speak to students about managing their mental health.
Tyrone from LIVIN reinforced the message to the Year 7s and 8s that “it ain't weak to speak”. LIVIN is an organisation that aims to reduce stigma around mental health. Speakers visit organisations to educate about identifying signs of deteriorating mental health and how to help find help.
Jodie from headspace spoke to the Year 10s on the topic of coping with stress. Jodie helped students to identify symptoms of anxiety and provided strategies to minimise stress. Jodie told students that anxiety is a normal part of life and motivates us to get things done. However, once the symptoms of anxiety get in the way of everyday life, it is time to reach out for help.
Also, during QMHW, the Ipswich Jets held a workshop with students which included a mental health focus. We were also visited by Brisbane Bullets who played against staff and students in a lunchtime match.

As the middle of term 4 approaches, the last activities for the year are well and truly under-way.
CHRISTMAS COFFEE & CHAT
Wednesday the 2nd November was our last Defence parent catch up morning tea for 2022. The Christmas Coffee & Chat was held at the Providence Splash and Play. This was a great opportunity to reflect on 2022, provide feedback on how we can improve the Defence School Mentor program within the College and catch up with one another for a coffee and some Christmas nibbles.
POSTING OUT
This year sees our first RVSSC families posting out of RAAF Base Amberley since the College opened in 2020.
Posting can be an extremely stressful time for ADF families, especially when it is done over the Christmas holidays. Our exiting students’ resilience is tested during this time as they close one chapter in their lives and begin a new one. Changes in schools, friendships, leaving extended family, and the uncertainty of where they will be living next, is a tough test of character for anyone, but is testament to the adaptability of our Defence kids.
I wish our departing families all the very best in their new locations. It has been a privilege for me to be in a position to offer support to you and your children during your time at RVSSC. I cannot emphasise enough that Ripley Valley SSC’s loss will be another schools gain.
AMBERLEY (Defence Student Mascot)
Amberley the Koala has been very busy, gaining insight into the military lifestyle by spending time with the Air Refuelling Operators of 33 Squadron (Airbus KC-30 Multi Role Tanker Transports) and the Loadmasters of 36 Squadron (Boeing C-17 Globemaster).
Amberley’s role is to help not only Defence students, but all members of our College community, to engage with and understand the many diverse roles our ADF parents have in the military and how that translates to the broader community.
This is done by Amberley accompanying our ADF parents to their squadrons or units (Army, Air Force and Navy) where and when possible. Amberley’s adventures are then documented (by journal and photo’s) and will be presented to staff and students later this term at assembly. Exciting stuff!
Amberley’s journal is proving to be an engaging read for our students.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
At the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month, Australia will pause to our honour the service personnel who have fought and who have died in the many conflicts around the world since World War One.
It is a time for reflection on how we live our own lives, and how much of what we take for granted is owed to the sacrifices made in those conflicts.

Chaplain News
Dear Parents/Carers
We have hit the middle of the final term of 2022 and have much to look forward to in the last half of the term such as camps, rewards day and our Orientation Day.
Assessments have now commenced. It's important for your child to look after themselves. This can look like going for a walk, hanging out with their friends or doing something they enjoy. Having a proper rest will assist them in their ability to focus better on their studies.
Breakfast Club
Breakfast Club is still operating on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until the end of week 8. I do want to thank all of our student volunteers this term for helping out. Without them, Breakfast club would not run as smoothly as it does.
Love Bites
Love Bites has finished. Thanks to all of our year 10s that participated. Alicia our Youth Worker and myself are looking forward to running the program in 2023.
Rock & Water
Sadly Rock & Water was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. I do want to thank those who signed up, and look forward to running it in Term 1 and Term 3 next year.
2023 Peer Mentors
Peer Mentors for 2023 have been selected and notified. A 2 day training program will be happening in week 10. If your child has been selected, the training permission form will be sent out soon, so keep an eye on your emails.
Awards Evening
The Chaplaincy Service had the honour of sponsoring the Well-being Champion Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize those who serve in the college and in the broader community as well as those who look after the well-being of others. Congratulations once again Erin Boby who received the Senior Well-being Champion Award, and Kripa Fragy, who received the Junior Well-being Champion Award.
Spiritual Support
One of my roles as Chaplain is to provide spiritual support. One of the ways I do this is to connect students with a local youth group. If you feel as a parent that this is something your child needs, please contact me and I will find local youth groups in your locality.
Chaplaincy Committee
The Local Chaplaincy Committee is the supporting and guiding body behind the Chaplaincy Service. It's purpose is to assist and shape the service so that it effectively supports well-being of the school community; both at RVSSC & at Ripley Valley State School. If you would like to attend and be a part of the committee, we have our next meeting on Thursday the 10th of November at 4 pm here at the college.
SU Camps
Scripture Union Australia, the organisation that employs the chaplains here in Ripley Valley and in hundreds of schools across the country, is also a camping organisation. If you are looking for something for your child to do over the holidays, please follow the following link. https://sucamps.org.au/?season=summer
I'm looking forward to remainder of the term.
Take care,

We all deserve respectful, safe and non-violent environments, so aggression and harassment of any kind—physical, verbal or otherwise—isn't acceptable.
When you interact with school staff, remember we're all on the same team to support your child. We all have your child's best interests at heart, and the best way to achieve a positive learning experience is to work together.
The Ipswich City Council is looking to recruit a new cohort to the Ipswich Youth Advisory Council (IYAC). The new IYAC members will comprise young people aged between 13-18 years who come together to have a voice for raising issues and sharing ideas that affect young people.
IYAC aims to:
·
- increase civic participation by our youth community
- develop young people’s knowledge of the issues that affect them at a Federal, State and Local Government level
- provide an opportunity to work collaboratively in a team with other young people to affect real change
- provide a voice for young people about council issues, strategies, and plans
- establish strong connections with the Ipswich City Council and elected officials
- extend the leadership potential of young people in Ipswich through collaboratively learning
- provide an increased understanding of community issues, planning, policy, and decision-making processes to young people.
