School Newsletter (Week 1, Term 4 2025)

Dear Ripley Valley Community,

Welcome to Term 4! As we begin the final term of the year, I want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible achievements of our staff and students and share some exciting milestones that continue to shape our college’s journey.

Staff Excellence and Recognition

We are proud to announce that three of our exceptional educators—Ben Clarke, Leesa Drew, and Aly Brown—have been recognised as Highly Accomplished Teachers in 2025. This brings our total to five Highly Accomplished staff members, joining Lauren Marks and Kiera O'Neill, who received the honour in 2024. These recognitions reflect the deep commitment and professionalism of our teaching team.

Additionally, Callum Simmons and Srikanth Sogathur have recently been awarded State Teach X Awards for their outstanding contributions to student outcomes and development. Their innovative teaching practices and dedication to student success are helping set new benchmarks in education across Queensland.

Student Achievements in Health and Vocational Pathways

We’re thrilled to share that Justice has been awarded the State Winner of the Health Gateways Award, recognising excellence in health education and leadership. Edwin has also made us proud as one of three State Finalists for Health Gateways Training—an outstanding achievement that highlights the strength of our vocational education programs.

This Friday, we wish Maddison and Cody all the best as finalists in the Apprenticeships Queensland School-Based Apprenticeship Awards for 2025. Their dedication and success in their chosen trades are a testament to the opportunities available through our college’s vocational pathways.

University Headstart Program – A Record Year

This year, we celebrated our largest cohort of Year 10–12 students graduating from the Trimester 1 Headstart Program, in partnership with our local universities. Over 30 students successfully completed university-level courses, with a high percentage achieving High Distinctions. This is a remarkable accomplishment and reflects the academic strength and ambition of our senior students.

Ripley Valley State Secondary College is now proud to be the largest university preparation program for senior students in the Greater Ipswich area. We are excited to continue expanding and strengthening our university partnerships in 2026, providing even more opportunities for our students to thrive in tertiary education.

Looking Ahead

Term 4 is a time of reflection, celebration, and preparation. To our Year 12 students—your final term is here, and we are incredibly proud of your journey. Stay focused, support one another, and finish strong.

Thank you to our staff, students, and families for your continued support and partnership. Let’s make Term 4 a memorable and successful conclusion to 2025.

Yours Sincerely,
Brendan Krueger

I hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved break and has returned feeling recharged for the final stretch before Christmas. As we head toward the end of the year, there are several exciting events and celebrations on the College calendar. These include:

Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW):

We kicked off Term 4 by celebrating Queensland Mental Health Week - a statewide initiative that encourages all Queenslanders to connect with the people, places, and activities that support their mental wellbeing. At Ripley Valley SSC, we marked the occasion with a range of activities, including the Deamer’s Festival music concert, a Native Oz Bushfoods workshop, and our annual Wellbeing Expo, which featured a variety of external providers. It was once again a fantastic opportunity for students to reflect on their mental health and take part in experiences that promote positive wellbeing.

Awards Evening:

Preparations are well underway for our Annual Awards Evening, to be held on Wednesday 22nd October (Week 3) from 6:00pm in the RaptorDome. This special night recognises student excellence through the presentation of Raptor Awards, Special Awards, Subject Awards, and the announcement of our 2025 School Leaders. Invitations will be distributed this week to families of students who will be receiving awards. We look forward to celebrating the hard work, talent, and achievements of our students.

Remembrance Day Service:

Our Remembrance Day Service will take place on Monday 10th November at 8:45am in the RaptorDome. Parents, Carers and friends of the College are invited to attend this service as we commemorate those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their Nation.

In addition, Ripley Valley SSC will again be represented at the Ipswich RSL Service on Tuesday 11th November, where our two Defence Peer Mentors will lay a wreath at the Honour Stone — a gesture of respect and remembrance for all who have served and sacrificed in conflicts around the world.

End of Term Rewards Trip:

At the end of this Term students in Years 7 – 9 will have the opportunity to attend the Rewards Trip to Wet‘n’Wild on Monday 8th December. To attend this event students will need to complete a Microsoft Forms application which will be send out later in the Term.

As part of the application process students must acknowledge the following:

  • My current approved attendance is over 95% (see Daymap Profile for details)
  • I have not received more than 2 Administrative Detentions this Term
  • I have not received a suspension this Term
  • I have completed all assessment, drafts and exams to date
  • My parents/carers give permission for me to attend the RVSSC Reward Trips

Further information about this event will be made available throughout the Term.

Deputy Principal - Year 7 and Year 8 - Culture and Engagement

Welcome back to Term 4! I hope all our students and families had a relaxing and restful break and are ready for the final term of the year.

As we approach the end of the year, it is important to remind ourselves of the goals we have set along the way. Holidays are a great opportunity to reflect and reset before getting back into the swing of things. I encourage all students to take the opportunity to remind themselves of not only their short-term goals (Term 4 results) but also their long-term goals (what they want to achieve by the end of year 12) and continue to work towards these. As you reflect on your recent results, determine the steps you need to take to help you move from where you are to where you want to be. Author of Atomic Habits, James Clear, provides the following insight to keep ourselves focussed on our goals.

"When you're doing something hard, focus on the fun part. Many people make a subtle mistake, which is they emphasize how difficult it is to do something. They tell themselves writing is hard or running is hard, or math is hard and so on. The dominant thought in their mind is that this is hard to do. And it is true these things (and many others in life) can be challenging. Meanwhile, people who thrive in a given area are often emphasizing a completely different aspect of the experience. They are thinking about how it feels good to move their body rather than telling themselves exercise is hard. Or, perhaps, they aren't really thinking much at all. They may slip into a trance during their run, a meditative rhythm. But what they are almost certainly not doing is repeating a mental story about how hard it is to do the thing. Their dominant thought is about some element of the experience they enjoy. They are working hard, but with the fun part in mind."

As both our year 11 and 12 students head towards their exam block period, it is important for them to not lose sight of the end goal they are trying to achieve while working through the study and revision period. We wish our students the best in this season and know they will put their best effort in for this final push.

    YEAR 12 EXTERNAL EXAM BLOCK

In a few short weeks, our year 12 students start their External Exam block. This exam block starts on Monday 27th October and runs until Tuesday 18th November. The schedule of all exams can be found on the QCAA website and students have been provided with an individual copy of their exams this week.

The following information is important to note as it may differ from previous exam sessions:

    • Year 12 students are only required to attend school for scheduled exams or VET catch up sessions.
    • Students must arrive at least 30 minutes prior to beginning of the exam session and are to wear correct uniform.
    • When students have completed their scheduled exam, they are able to leave the exam session.
    • Year 12 students at school at any time other than an exam session or lunch break, will be working in the designated study classroom. The study room is a supervised room and attendance recorded each lesson. The expectation is that students work quietly and independently.
    • Any students with outstanding VET modules of work will be required to attend VET catch up sessions during the exam block. Students will be required to attend these sessions until all required work is completed and marked as competent.

    YEAR 11 EXAM BLOCK

With the start of October, we have now only a few short weeks left with our year 11 students before they start their exams for Unit 2. Year 11 exam block will be held from Monday 27th to Friday 31st October. All year 11 students have received their exam block timetable this week. To help assist students and ensure that the exam block runs smoothly, we ask that parents please take note of the following information:

    • Year 11 students are only required to attend school for scheduled exams or VET catch up sessions.
    • Students must arrive at the beginning of the exam session and are to wear correct uniform.
    • When required for a scheduled exam session, students must remain in the designated exam room for the entire scheduled session with their teacher.
    • Year 11 students at school at any time other than an exam session or lunch break, will be working in the designated study classroom. The study room is a supervised room, and a roll will be marked each lesson. The expectation is that students work quietly and independently.
    • Any students with outstanding VET modules of work will be required to attend VET catch up sessions during the exam block. Students will be required to attend these sessions until all required work is completed.

I wish all students the best of luck as they enter into these exam blocks and look forward to celebrating their success with them at the end.

    Kind regards,

    Deputy Principal - Year 11 & Year 12 - Pathways & Partnerships

    trobs20@eq.edu.au

Welcome back to Term 4! Term 4 is a very exciting and quick term for our Year 10 cohort. It is an exciting time to watch our Year 10 students transition into the non-compulsory phase of learning and continue towards their pathway goals.

    Year 10 Key Dates

    • Year 10 Exam Block - Monday 24th November - Thursday 27th November. Students will only be expected onsite when they have a scheduled exam or are required onsite to complete assessment. All students will need to remain in the exam room for the duration of their exam period. Study supervision will be available if students need to be onsite for this exam period. More information and exam timetables will be shared with students in the coming weeks.
    • Friday 28th November - Last day of Term 4 for Year 10 & 11 students.

    Uniform Bank Process
As you may be aware, if a student arrives at school in incorrect uniform, they will be provided with a loaned uniform item for the day. This item must be returned at the end of the same school day. If it is not returned, families will be invoiced to cover the cost of a replacement.

To support this process, please note the following:

    • If your child borrows a uniform item and does not return it the same day, a parent/caregiver will receive a text message notification.

    • If the item remains outstanding, a follow-up email will be sent.

    • In Weeks 5 and 10 of each term, any students who have not returned their loaned uniform will be invoiced for a replacement item. Once generated, these invoices cannot be removed as the college will be required to purchase a new item.

    • For hygiene reasons, socks cannot be loaned. If a student is wearing incorrect socks, they will be provided with a new pair. An invoice of $2.00 will be issued to cover the cost, and the student will keep the socks.

    Bus Protocols

A timely reminder that all students using bus services must have a valid bus pass, or tap-on using smart ticketing (e.g., Go Card or Tap&Go). This helps bus providers collect accurate service data and make informed decisions about routes and scheduling.

Students are reminded to follow the school’s bus queuing procedures:

    • Students catching the early 6275 or 6265 should go straight to the bus stop after school. Students catching the later 6275 and 6265 must also queue at foundation park to ensure accurate bus route numbers and to reduce over-crowding concerns.

    • Students catching other bus routes should queue in the designated area near Foundation Park.

As student numbers grow, these routines are essential for maintaining safety and order.

Primary school staff will supervise younger students at the bus stop. Secondary students do not need to wait with their siblings but will be given priority boarding if they wish to sit together.

Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies Students Visit District and Supreme Courts in Queensland

On the 9th of September, Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students embarked on an engaging and insightful excursion to the District and Supreme Courts in Queensland, gaining first-hand exposure to the state’s criminal justice system in action.

The visit offered students a rare opportunity to deepen their understanding of the legal processes they study in the classroom. A highlight of the day was a session with Judge Phillip McCarthy, who generously took the time to speak with the students about sentencing practices in Queensland. His insights into the principles that guide sentencing decisions—including proportionality, deterrence, and rehabilitation—provided valuable context for the real-world application of criminal law.

In addition to the informative discussion with Judge McCarthy, students were able to observe live court proceedings. This included both sentencing hearings and trial procedures, allowing students to witness the roles of judges, barristers, solicitors, and court staff in a formal courtroom setting.

The experience helped bring the theory of criminal law to life, offering students a clearer understanding of how justice is administered in Queensland. Observing the formalities, legal arguments, and judicial decision-making processes reinforced key curriculum topics and sparked thoughtful discussion among students and teachers alike.

Overall, the court excursion was an invaluable educational experience, equipping future legal professionals and engaged citizens with a practical perspective on the criminal justice system.

Year 8 Japanese Excursion – A Japanese Birthday in Brisbane

On Tuesday, 12 August (Week 5), the Year 8 Japanese class had the exciting opportunity to step into the world of Japanese celebrations—without leaving Brisbane! As part of their Term 3 unit on Festivals and Celebrations, students experienced a simulated Japanese birthday through food, entertainment, and cultural activities.

The day began with shopping at Japanese stores in the city, followed by karaoke at Strike Bowling. After a little coaxing, students soon embraced the experience, singing along, cheering for one another, and building confidence in this authentic Japanese pastime. We must also thank Strike for generously treating our group to unlimited use of the photobooth, which quickly became a favourite activity and was reminiscent of the well-known purikura booths in Japan.

After a walk through the city to Southbank, we enjoyed a traditional obentō lunch. The restaurant staff were particularly impressed by the students’ willingness to use chopsticks and their effort to follow Japanese meal customs. The final highlight was at Fluffy Soufflé, where those who weren't full from lunch, sampled the famous fuwa fuwa pankeeki—light, fluffy pancakes that have become a global Japanese dessert craze.

Students reflected on this experience through their class assessment, writing about the day in Japanese. I would like to commend them on their exemplary behaviour throughout the excursion. By all accounts, it was a fun, memorable, and highly engaging way to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture.  Thank you also to Miss Felber and Mr Watt, for their support in making the day a success!

          Go-Kart in Schools Program – 2025 Race Wrap-Up

This year, Ripley Valley State Secondary College proudly entered two karts into the Go-Kart in Schools competition, thanks to the generous support of Nick and the team at Direct Steel.

Despite facing mechanical and brake issues during the event, our students demonstrated remarkable resilience and problem-solving skills. Our newest Student built Kart achieved a respectable 7th place finish out of 21 competitors, and it proved to be one of the fastest on the track, recording lap times less than two seconds behind the overall winner. Unfortunately, we had to retire our original kart early this year due to mechanical problems, but the experience has only strengthened our determination to return even stronger in 2026.

The day was a steep learning curve for all involved. Students and staff worked side by side to tackle challenges as they arose—replacing chains, rebuilding brakes with basic hand tools, and even carrying out running repairs with nothing more than zip ties and “100-mile-an-hour tape.” These moments captured the true spirit of innovation, teamwork, and resilience.

Mr Philip and Mr Clarke would like to congratulate all students on their outstanding achievements this year. Their dedication, ingenuity, and teamwork were on full display both on and off the track. We look forward to building on this year’s successes and running the program again next year—faster, smarter, and stronger than ever before.

          RVSSC Wellbeing Expo

Recently, our school hosted a Wellbeing Expo celebrating Queensland Mental Health Week. The event brought together a range of local organisations from across Ipswich, offering students and staff opportunities to learn about health, wellbeing, and community supports.

Stallholders included representatives from community health services, youth organisations, and wellbeing programs who generously shared information, activities, and giveaways to promote positive mental health.

Students enjoyed engaging with local providers, asking questions, and discovering ways to care for their wellbeing and connect with their community.

A big thank you to all stallholders for taking the time to support our school and make this event a success — and to our staff and student helpers who made everything run smoothly!

Together, we continue to promote connection, belonging, and wellbeing across our school community.

          Hello everyone!

We’re your Youth Support Coordinator (YSC) team Linda, Jacob, and Simon. Our role at school is to support students in many ways, including individual check-ins, group programs, daily lunchtime activities, clubs, and after-school programs that help create a positive and welcoming environment to connect with peers.

This term, you’ll see us running small group programs that focus on student wellbeing. These groups give students the chance to share, learn, and support each other in a safe and relaxed setting. (See below for the Term 4 groups on offer.)
If you’re interested, please contact us at studentservices@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au. Students are also welcome to self-refer.

If a program is full this term, don’t worry as more opportunities will be available in Term 1, 2026.

As a school chaplain, my role is to provide emotional, spiritual and social support to the students and wider school community. RSL NEWS

          Greater Springfield RSL Sub-Branch

A new executive team at Greater Springfield RSL sub-branch.

Executive team President – Glenn West (ex-Navy)

Secretary – Matt Burgoyne (Current RAAF Sgt – 35sqn)

          Treasurer – Stephanie Shipman (Ex-Navy)

Vice President – Aaron Thomas (Current Army Reserve Officer – Captain)

Assistant Secretary – Brad Barr (Current Navy – CPO)

“The RSL family is an amazing organisation, that was formed at a time where memorial halls and pubs, were the only location to meet anyone in the community. The RSL family has for over a century, conducted itself at these locations accordingly. Here is a home truth not often said, but it needs to be. The reality is, today’s RSL family fails to meet the needs of the modern veterans and their families. This is what we seek to change. We have been given an RSL mandate, that geographical boundaries do not apply to us. Traditional RSL cultures, do not apply to us, on areas of how we connect with modern veterans and their families. We are 100% focused on delivering an RSL family to the Greater Springfield region and beyond, a modern RSL sub-branch, that directly meets and exceeds the needs of the veteran community. If any veteran wanted to jump onboard this journey, we simply encourage them to join and get involved. It’s going to be a wild adventure!”

Defence Families are encouraged to join the Greater Springfield RSL Sub-Branch, but don’t need to. They would like you to connect with them however.

Regards, Glenn West – President, Greater Springfield RSL sub-branch.

Temporary Road Closure and Construction Works – Barrams Road
          Screenshot_2025_10_10_102619.png

          Figure 1 - Locality Map

SEE Civil, in partnership with Stockland Development, wishes to advise the community that essential road construction works will be undertaken along Barrams Road commencing Wednesday, 1st October 2025. These works form part of the broader Town Centre development program and are scheduled to continue for a duration of approximately three (3) months, weather permitting.

          Impact on Road Users

          • During this period, Barrams Road will be closed to through traffic at the location indicated on the attached layout plan.
          • A designated detour route will be provided via the newly constructed Town Centre Connector Road, which represents the ultimate long-term alignment for the area.
          • Connections to adjoining side streets will remain closed throughout the construction program.

          Traffic Management and Safety

          • A reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will apply within and approaching the construction zone.
          • Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians are requested to observe all posted traffic signage, detour directions, and instructions from traffic controllers at all times.
          • Every effort will be made to minimise disruption; however, some delays and changes to normal traffic conditions should be expected during the works.

          Community Considerations

These works are essential to the delivery of upgraded infrastructure that will improve accessibility and connectivity within the precinct. SEE Civil and Stockland Development are committed to undertaking the project with a focus on safety, minimising inconvenience, and ensuring timely completion.

We thank all road users and nearby residents for their patience and cooperation during this period.
