Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome back to school and I trust your Easter holiday was enjoyable and refreshing. I would like to especially welcome a number of new students and their families who have enrolled with us this term and a number of new permanent staff who have commenced with us this term as well. I welcome Ms Jasmine Diesing who is our Head of Department responsible for Flinders House and oversees the subject areas of English, Humanities and Languages. Mary Mahipus has also started with us as a passionate Math specialist teacher and we are pleased to have you both join our college community. A number of pre-service teachers and new teacher aides are also working with us throughout this term and I welcome them to our ever growing college team.
This week we commemorated ANZAC day with a solemn service held in the sports hall (Raptordome). As part of our ANZAC service we unveiled a new memorial/statue in recognition of 100 years of the RAAF. This metal sculpture will be installed over coming weeks in ANZAC Place at the front of our college and we look forward to this being one of many sculptures in this space over coming years. This Sunday, 25th April, all community members are invited to attend the inaugural Dawn service at our college commencing at 5.00am. I thank Central Valley Church for coordinating this service and working with our local community to make what I hope will become an annual event in our local community.
Throughout this year our College has a clear focus on preparing our school for the senior years of schooling, years 10-12. While thoughts of our first year 12 graduates in 2024 may appear far-off, we want to make sure that the decisions we make today prepare our students for tomorrow and life after school. Throughout this term parents and students will be asked for specific feedback on our new senior uniform which will be worn by students in years 10 -12 and also our year 10 subject offerings. This information will be shared with our College community through a range of mediums from parent information sessions, social media, online and P & C meetings. I encourage you to have your say when the opportunity arises and to help shape our great school as we prepare for the future.
Once again, thank you all for being an active member of our school community as we fulfil our school motto of 'Achieving Excellence Together.'
Yours sincerely,
Brendan Krueger

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning at school. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for and students are not expected to do so.
NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance; however, students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
All Year 7 and 9 students engaged in the Practice Writing Test during Week 1.
I encourage you to engage in the Public Demonstration Site to further support your child's familiarisation with the tools that are available in NAPLAN online. The number of adjustments available aim to encourage participation in NAPLAN Online for as many students as possible.
Why NAPLAN online?
NAPLAN Online provides a better assessment and more precise results.
One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is that it uses tailored (or adaptive) testing. This means that students receive questions better suited to their abilities, giving them more opportunity to demonstrate what they know and can do.
Feedback from students is that they find the online test more engaging.
Students with disability
NAPLAN Online has audio and visual alternative questions, including colour themes, that may be suitable for some students with disability.
For example, students:
- with hearing impairments receive proofreading questions (that do not depend on audio) to test their spelling rather than audio dictation items.
- with visual impairments are assisted within the platform by magnification and specially designed images, so that questions can be viewed more easily.
- who require particular contrast or colour themes access black text against a selection of five different colour backgrounds.
- receive rest breaks or extra time if required.
All questions are also keyboard accessible. This means that all students can access the online assessment without the use of a mouse or other pointing device. Using a mouse may be particularly challenging for students with motor impairments.
Check out this video about NAPLAN accessibility:
For further information about NAPLAN please see the attached information.
If you do not wish for your child to participate in NAPLAN online, please contact me via email at epren3@eq.edu.au

Coding Squadron (By Mr Sokathur)
Our coding pilots at Ripley Valley State Secondary College are all set to embark on an amazing journey to create games, apps and IOTs (Internet of Things). If you see a patrolling robot or a swarming drone, be assured that our maverick coders are training them with expert python coding. As part of advancing education and #codingcounts initiative of Queensland Government range of coding activities are undertaken to encourage our students into coding robots and drone and to become digital creators and innovators.
During Term -2 our coding pilots at RVSSC will be creating 2D games and develop codes for controlling drones . Our budding computer game developers will be engaged in creating complex video games and in the process develop 21st century skills like critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Further, students throughout grades 7-9 are passionate about becoming tech-savvy coders and have joined our Coding Squadron Club that operates every Tuesday after school from 2:45-3:30 and 2nd breaks both Monday and Wednesday. They are enthusiastic about creating meaningful games and functional Android apps using the themes of cyber-safety, eSports and digital footprints. With these games and apps our RVSSC Coding Pilots are keen to enter the National level Australian STEM Game competition and State level Queensland Premiers Coding Challenge 2021. Students develop problem solving skills when they are engaged in coding competitions that can be applied across Science, Technology and Mathematics. While there are several students who have joined the RVSSC - Coding Squadron Club and value their achievements in creating Android apps, there is still room for many to join. With so much fun and excitement our coding pilots at RVSSC are all set to take on term 2 to learn more skills in coding with python and other scripting languages.

The English, Humanities and Languages faculty have welcomed me as their new Head of Department, and I have also picked up the Flinders House HOD role this term. I would like to thank the RVSSC staff and community for their support, and in particular Ms Angela Waugh for making my transition to the school smooth. I bring 18 years of experience in the education department to RVSSC, and have spent the last 8 of those years at Springfield Central State High. I believe that it 'takes a village’ to raise successful, determined, resilient and respectful young adults, and I look forward to working with the RVSSC community!
In the coming weeks, our faculty has a number of opportunities for students to engage with the curriculum outside of the classroom.
Our Year 9 Humanities students are off to the Queensland museum – extending their understanding of the First World War at the ANZAC Legacy Gallery. This excursion will contribute to students’ success in their assessment this term, providing opportunities to examine the war itself, its impacts from multiple viewpoints of those in the front-line as well as their families, friends and associates back at the home-front, and its legacies, both historical and contemporary, which have had a lasting or profound impact on this state and its peoples. Payments for the excursion are due now, so if you have not yet finalised payment for your child, please do so at your earliest convenience. If you have any payment or financial difficulties, please contact administration@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au as soon as possible.
Mrs Carolyn Easdale is also facilitating the 2021 RVSSC Readers Cup teams including a Year 7 and 8 team, and one Year 9 team. The Readers Cup is organised by the Qld Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a state wide competition for young readers. Teams of four to five students together read a set of books, and then compete with other teams to answer quiz questions from the books. Winners from regional competitions then compete in a state final. Over the coming weeks, students who have registered will begin meeting with Mrs Easdale and their teams in preparation for the competition. Keep a listen out on the notices and school social media platforms for information relating to The Readers Cup. Please contact Mrs Easdale with any enquires or requests for information ceasd4@eq.edu.au

Maths, Science & HPE
Welcome back to all of the RVSSC community for the start of Term 2. I hope that everyone had a restful and rejuvenating break. This term we are excited to introduce a new teacher to our college community, Miss Mary Mahipus. Mary will predominately teach Mathematics this year to Year 7, 8 and 9 . We are so excited to have her join our team.

What's happening in the Maths, Science and HPE world?
- Cross Country carnival is happening on the Friday of Week 1. James Dunn and his team are excited for this event and keen to source our Ripley Valley team to represent our school at the Central Comets carnival. A huge thank you goes out to James for the huge amount of work that goes into making these carnivals and all of the sport happen at RVSSC.
- Athletics Carnival will also be happening this term. This carnival will be held during week 10 of the term.
- Y8 Mathematics Enrichment - students are now in new Math Enrichment groupings and have had a great start to the term in these groups. We are excited for the opportunity that these additional numeracy lessons bring. These lessons are designed to best support our students to develop their numeracy skills and fill in any missing gaps. These essential numeracy skills underpin everything that we do within the Mathematics curriculum but we don't always have the time to teach these skills or misconceptions.
As always, if you would like any further information as to what is happening within the Maths, Science or HPE classrooms please just reach out to contact myself or your child's teacher. We look forward to meeting many of our parents with the upcoming Parent Teacher Interviews.

Colour Run
My role as the School Chaplain is funded through generous donations from the community and through fundraising events.
One fundraising event is a colour run. This year we’re holding the School Fun Run’s Crazy Colour Day as a major fundraising event this year! The event will be held on 28/05/21 We are really hoping to raise $10,000.
Currently, we have raised $772.94 of our $10,000, so there is a way to go and I hope you’ll keep supporting us! Remember, the money raised will be going towards the Chaplaincy Service.
If you want to be a part of the fundraising.
If you want to give directly to the school’s profile, you can do so by following the link provided: https://app.schoolfundraising.com.au/fundraising/rvssc-f238fd7e-7969-42db-93a7-256d0502cfc8

Local Chaplaincy Committee
The Local Chaplaincy Committee (LCC) is the supporting and guiding body behind the Chaplaincy Service helping to shape it to meet the wellbeing of the school community. The LCC meets roughly once a term and oversees the chaplaincy service both here at RVSSC and the primary school. If you would like to attend and be a part of the committee, we have our next meeting on Thursday the 6th of May at 4 pm at the primary school.
Trivia Night
Springfield Christian Family, a local church in Springfield is running a Trivia Fundraising Night on Friday the 28th of May at Woodcrest College at 7pm. The purpose of this event is to raise funds for local school chaplains. The church has decided to support the chaplaincy service here at RVSSC. The cost of this event is $10 with a chance to give financially towards the school as well as having an auction. Registrations are still coming so be on the lookout for this as you will need to register online for this.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via email
Take care
Parents and students please be advised that due to safety concerns people wishing to enter the primary school should do so via the external front gate and not the internal gates between schools.
High school students that may be collecting siblings should exit the secondary college via its main gates, walk to the primary school front entry and proceed to the primary school “Piazza” for sibling collection. Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.
ENROLMENTS OPEN FOR 2022
Our enrolments for Year 2022 have now opened. If you have a sibling who will start Year 7 or know of anyone that is intending to enrol their child in 2022, our enrolment forms are now available through the school website.
