Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope that all our students and their families enjoyed a safe and restful break over the holidays. It’s always a pleasure to see the school come back to life with the energy and enthusiasm of our returning students and dedicated staff.

Term 2 is traditionally a time of renewed focus and steady progress. With assessments, extra-curricular activities, and a number of important school events on the horizon, it promises to be a busy and productive term for us all. I encourage every student to set clear goals and embrace the opportunities ahead with commitment and a positive mindset.

This week, we also pause to reflect on ANZAC Day—a significant time in our national calendar. It is a solemn occasion where we honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of all Australian and New Zealand defence force personnel—past and present. Their contributions have shaped the freedoms we enjoy today, and their legacy continues to inspire values of resilience, mateship, and community spirit within our school and nation.

We are proud to have members of our school community who are serving or have served in the Australian Defence Force. We thank them and their families for their commitment and the example they set for our young people.

As the term unfolds, we look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child’s learning and wellbeing. Let’s make Term 2 a time of growth, engagement, and achievement.

Yours Sincerely,

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to the start of Term 2. I hope the break provided a chance for rest and renewal for your family. As we return to another busy and exciting term, I want to take a moment to commend our Year 7 and 8 students for their outstanding efforts throughout Term 1. Their dedication to learning and the impressive results they achieved are a testament to their hard work and resilience.  I look forward to celebrating those students who have attained the highest levels of academic achievement at the Excellence Morning Tea, which will be held in Week 4 of the Term.

Already, we have hit the ground running with several key events this week, and many more are on the horizon. These include our College ANZAC Service, Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey, and our School Immunisation Program (SIP).

College ANZAC Service

On Thursday the 24th April the College held our annual ANZAC Service in the RaptorDome, marking the 110th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. This important event gave our College community an opportunity to gather to pay our respects to those who have given so much for our Nation. As always, we were pleased to share this service with a range of special invited guests, including: our local politicians, representatives from the RSL, personnel from the Australian Defence Force, as well as Defence Families, and other friends of the College.

As part of this Service, the school unveiled our latest commemorative statue which has been designed to honour those Indigenous Australians who have served our Nation. The statue was created in consultation with our community Elders, and represents Private Niney McDonald, a First Nations Australian who served with the 11th Light Horse Regiment during World War I. In the coming days this statue will be added to other statues featured in ANZAC Place.

As in the past, there will also be a dawn service at ANZAC Place at the front of the College at 5am on the 25th April. All community members are welcome to attend this special event.

Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey

In keeping with our continued focus on student wellbeing, all students will be invited to complete the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey in Week 2 of the Term.  The purpose of this survey is to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement so that we can meet their needs and support them in the best way possible.

The survey measures many aspects of students’ wellbeing, engagement, and experience at school. These aspects include: resilience, school climate, relationships, sense of belonging, motivation and perseverance, academic self-concept, personal social capabilities, future outlook and aspirations, general life satisfaction and general health.

The information collected through the survey will be kept confidential. No personal information will be shared with anyone outside of the Queensland Department of Education. The Queensland Department of Education will store the data according to strict guidelines. Student’s answers will be de-identified. They will only be reported back to the school as part of their year levels’ results. No one at your child’s school will be able to see their individual responses.

Participation in the survey is voluntary. Choosing not to participate will not affect your child’s education in any way. If you do not wish for your child to participate in the QEW Survey, please contact the school.

On the day, teachers will arrange for students to take part in the Survey online during class time. It will take about 30 minutes to complete. If your child requires additional assistance, teachers and/or support staff will be able to help them.

More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website: https://alt-qed.qed.qld.gov.au/publications/reports/statistics/schooling/students/queensland-engagement-wellbeing-survey

    Welcome back!

Welcome back to all our staff, students and families. I hope you had a lovely and relaxing time during the break and ready for another term.

    Pathways - Health Academy

Congratulation to the 5 year 11 students who were successful in securing a traineeship with West Moreton Health in either Nursing or Allied Health. With only 18 positions available in the region this demonstrates an extraordinary acknowledgement of the work completed as part of the RVSSC Health Academy to prepare students for these opportunities. While this a great achievement, it is a small stepping stone for our Health Academy with further partnerships being finalised in order to support more students with traineeship opportunities.

Ripley Valley SSC and UniSQ - Growing the Healthcare Industry

The University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) is opening new doors for aspiring nurses with an exciting opportunity for direct entry into its Bachelor of Nursing program.

In partnership with Ripley Valley State Secondary College, UniSQ will offer twenty (20) guaranteed places in the program. This initiative aims to provide a seamless transition for students pursuing careers in healthcare, particularly those who have undertaken vocational and preparatory education pathways.

     As part of this program:

    • Guaranteed Entry for Students who complete a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (or an equivalent qualification), and meet the current entry ranking, are eligible to apply for one of the 20 guaranteed places.
    • ATAR-eligible students who have not completed the Certificate III may also be considered for these direct entry places, provided they meet entry ranking requirements at the time of application.
    • Students admitted under this agreement and who meet all compliance requirements will be guaranteed a professional experience placement in the Ipswich and West Moreton area during their first year of study.

This partnership represents a strong commitment to supporting students on their path to a nursing career and strengthening the future healthcare workforce in the region.

More information about how to take part in this initiative will be provided to our students in term 3.

    QCE review date claimer

At the end of the first unit of year 11 students will be required to participate in a QCE review and parents are encouraged to attend. During this process students and parents will meet with a member of the College's Leadership team to discuss their progress and their intended pathway. These review meetings will occur in Week 9 of Term 2 with more information provided during Term 2.

    Assessment reminders

As part of the school assessment policy, it is imperative that students are adhering to assessment due dates. As per QCAA guidelines, the school is only able to use evidence that is submitted by the student on or before the due date (submitted drafts or final tasks).

If a student does not submit any work for an assessment or do not attend an exam on the due date, they will receive a not rated (NR) and not receive a subject result for that unit of work. This will impact on a student’s academic progress and their QCE eligibility.

For these reasons it is important that students and parents do not plan any absences during the school term and are aware of when all assessment items are due. If a student is unable to complete their assessment task or an exam due to an illness or emergent issue, they are required to complete the AARA (illness and misadventure) request and attached the QCAA confidential medical report form.

    Student Drivers and Passengers

During the senior years of schooling many of our students become drivers and start driving themselves to school. Whilst this is a significant and exciting time for our young people it is critical that we know who they are.

Therefore, we request that if you have a student driver that you access the Student Driver Permission form and complete with your student and submit as soon as possible. This is to ensure the safety of your student.

It is also important that as parents/guardians you understand that we have a duty of care for all our students and that your son or daughter does not drive other students in their car without the prior appropriate permissions. Once again this is to protect the wellbeing of all our students. If your child will be transporting other students, it is important that the Permission to be Transported by a Student Driver form is completed by all passengers and their parents/carers.

We would also like to remind all parents that students are not permitted to leave the school grounds without written permission from parents provided to Administration. It is not acceptable for students to leave the school grounds at any time during the day to get 'things' from their cars.

As a school we appreciate any support and reinforcement of these expectations from parents/guardians. Thank you for your ongoing support in this area.

If you have any questions about students driving, please contact Mr Todd Robson - Deputy Principal.

    Kind regards,

    Pedagogy Updates

At our school, our current pedagogical priority is to develop a shared understanding and improve our practice of engaging students with feedback. Evidence suggests that feedback can be one of the most effective tools to support students’ growth in their learning. It helps students to recognise their strengths, reflect on areas for improvement, and determine the next steps. To ensure feedback can be accessible and effective for students, it is so important that they are able to, first, clearly articulate their learning goals for each subject.

Being able to verbalise what they are working towards empowers students to make sense of the feedback they receive and plan for next steps. As parents and carers, a great starting point is to talk to your child about their learning goals. Ask questions like, “What are you focusing on in English right now?” or “What’s something you’re trying to improve in Maths?” These conversations lay the foundation for students to interpret and act on feedback they receive from teachers.

    Year 10 Updates

    • Year 10 Work Experience Program – as per the email sent to all parents and carers yesterday, Work Experience Sign Up day is scheduled for Friday 9th May. This will take place at school and sign up is available at both breaks outside the canteen area.

          Welcome back to Term 2!

This term is set for some big events both within the classroom and outside - stay tuned for some Humanities Adventures soon!

Late last term, on the 28th of March, Year 11 and 10 Legal Studies students had the valuable opportunity to hear directly from those working on the frontlines of law enforcement and youth justice. Senior Constable Rohan Prince, along with two dedicated members of the Youth Justice Team, visited our school to present a powerful and informative session on the realities of crime, consequences, and community safety.

The presentation focused on the new Adult Crime = Adult Time laws, as well as recent updates to police powers. Through real-life scenarios and honest discussion, students were able to gain a clear understanding of how these laws impact young people and the serious consequences that come with making the wrong choices.

What made the session especially meaningful was the open Q&A, where students were encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and learn directly from the experts. Topics ranged from police procedures and youth rights to the support systems in place for young people who want to make positive changes. This eye-opening session helped students see the bigger picture—not just what the law says, but why it exists and how it affects their futures. It's a reminder that knowledge is power, and making informed choices today can lead to better outcomes tomorrow.

The image below shows the three visitors presenting a short skit involving the theft of a phone in the local shopping centre and explaining what happens to the accused after s/he is detained.

We are looking forward to an eventful Term 2 and cannot wait to share more exciting things with you.

Unforgettable Adventures in Japan: A Journey of Culture, Connection, and Discovery

Our recent school trip to Japan over the holidays was nothing short of extraordinary! From the moment we arrived, students immersed themselves in the vibrant culture, history, and daily life of one of the world’s most fascinating countries.

The journey included a deeply moving visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, where students reflected on history and the importance of peace. The experience was both sobering and inspiring, encouraging thoughtful conversations about resilience and hope where students donated 1000 paper cranes.

From there, we travelled to the breathtaking Miyajima Island, home to the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, with its majestic torii gate rising out of the sea. Surrounded by natural beauty, students marvelled at the harmony between spirituality and the environment that defines much of Japanese culture.

In Kyoto, students explored shrines such as the elegant Heian Jingu Shrine and took part in a fun and delicious cultural experience: okonomiyaki and manju-making cooking classes! These hands-on activities sparked laughter, teamwork, and new appreciation for Japanese cuisine.

A true highlight was the homestay experience in Miyama, where students were warmly welcomed into the homes of local families. This rare opportunity to live and learn alongside our hosts gave students a deeper understanding of everyday Japanese life and created bonds that many will cherish for years to come.

Of course, no trip to Japan would be complete without some excitement and magic—Tokyo Disneyland delivered both in abundance! From thrilling rides to unforgettable shows, students fully embraced the joy and wonder of this world-famous theme park.

We also explored the future of art at the awe-inspiring Teamlab Planets in Tokyo. This interactive digital art museum left everyone awestruck and inspired, blending creativity, technology, and emotion in a way that was truly unforgettable.

Finally, students enjoyed a well-earned shopping day in Gion, Kyoto, picking up souvenirs and experiencing the charm of traditional streets lined with historic wooden machiya houses.

This trip to Japan was more than just a tour—it was a journey of learning, connection, and personal growth. Our students returned with broadened horizons, lasting friendships, and countless stories to share. We're so proud of how they represented our school and grateful for the incredible memories made.

We look forward to plan for the next tour in 2027!

Welcome to Term 2 from the Health Department

Welcome back to Term 2 at Ripley Valley State Secondary College! We hope the holiday break provided some well-earned rest time with family and our students are ready to put that extra Easter Egg energy to good use for the start of term.

We have a number of short weeks with public and show holidays disrupting up to the start of week 5 so this term will fly by as well. As we start to enter the cooler months of the year, we encourage all students to look after themselves this term so their attendance and academics are not negatively impacted.

          Cross Country

Special mention to Mr Sharma for organising a really fun cross country at the end of last term. Despite having to change the course on the morning due to rain, the day ran very smoothly with lots of fun had both staff and students.

Mr Clay Dawson also blew the entire field away literally by not only participating but winning every single race against the students except for one where he stopped to help support some students on the course. Our teachers are starting to forget what losing feels like after winning the teachers vs students Volleyball game at the end of last term as well. Will our students make a comeback in Term 2?

          Year 9 Food Specialisations - Term 1

Last term, our year 9 Food Specialisations classes were given the opportunity to engage in preparing and tasting kangaroo sausage rolls in the kitchen. The students were very engaged in the lesson and eager to try their prepared dishes. Well done to our year 9 teachers Ms McGovern, Ms Pollard and Ms Warrick for putting the learning experience together for our students.

          Term 2 Curriculum

This term within the junior space in both Food Specialisations and Health and Physical Education, our students will continue to build their knowledge, skills, and confidence they have developed in term 1 into term 2.

          Subject Unit
Year 8 Food Specialisations Around the World
Year 9 Food Specialisations Bite Into Balance
Year 7 HPE Clearing the Air (Vaping Education)
Year 8 HPE Game Day Ready
Year 9 HPE Healthy Relationships and Sexual Education
Year 9 Health, Sport and Exercise Science Motor Learning

In our senior subjects, students are engaging in more in-depth investigations and performance tasks that link directly to real-world health challenges and personal development goals.

Later this term, we’re looking forward to multiple opportunities for our students to engage with excursions and sporting events as well as our biggest whole school event for our Faculty with the Athletics Carnival coming up in week 10 this term on the 26th and 27th of June.

As always, we value your support and encourage you to reach out directly to your child's classroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns about their progress or involvement in our programs.

From the Guidance Officer: Supporting Student Wellbeing and Future Pathways

As part of our continued commitment to student wellbeing and future readiness, I’m pleased to share a few key initiatives that have been underway.

          1. Nurse Practitioner Clinic Now Open
Our Nurse Practitioner clinic is now fully operational, offering students convenient access to health support onsite. The clinic has been professionally fitted out and is already proving to be a valuable addition to our student wellbeing services.
Bookings can be made through Student Services, and we encourage parents to view the Nurse Practitioner fact sheets available on the school website under the Student Support tab. These provide detailed information about the clinic’s services and consent process.

          https://ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au/calendar-and-news/news/gp-clinic

          1. Conversations that Matter: Sex and Consent Education
Last term, I visited all Year 10 classes to deliver sessions on sex and consent, using resources from the national Consent Can’t Wait campaign. While these conversations can feel awkward, they are essential in helping students understand respectful boundaries and reduce risk of harm in the future.
Parents are encouraged to explore the resources available on the campaign website, which provide practical guidance on how to start conversations at home.

          https://www.consent.gov.au/?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_Y6sieDnjAMVc7pLBR1EYyxvEAAYASAAEgJaN_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

This term, our school-based police officer will also be presenting to Year 11 and 12 students during parade on respectful relationships – reinforcing the importance of these messages across the senior years.

          1. Career Updates: Planning for the Future
For students considering a career in medicine, registrations for the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) are now open. I strongly encourage interested Year 12 students to visit the Careers Board for key information and updates on careers in dentistry and medicine prior to the closing date of May 16th.

In Term 2, I will be presenting to Year 10 students about university prerequisites and supporting them as they prepare for their SET Plan interviews – an important step in shaping their senior pathways.

As a parent myself, I understand how overwhelming this process can feel for a 15-year-old who may believe they need to have their entire future mapped out. The truth is, they don’t. SET Planning is about exploring options and building a flexible pathway – not locking in a final decision.

One of the most helpful ways parents can reduce stress during this time is by keeping the conversation open and pressure-free. Rather than focusing on having all the answers, try asking questions that spark curiosity: What are you interested in? What subjects do you enjoy? What do you want to try next? Reassure your child that their path may evolve – and that’s perfectly okay.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or would like to learn more about these initiatives.

          Warm regards,
          Janet Ingram

2025 National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)

          Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On 1st August 2025, all schools across Australia will provide data to the Australian Government about students who receive ongoing adjustments in the school setting based on a broad definition of disability. This process, known as the National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD), helps schools and governments better understand the needs of students with disabilities and how they can be best supported at school.

The NCCD uses the definition of disability from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and ensures that students receive appropriate adjustments to participate in education on the same basis as their peers. These adjustments may include support in the following: ✔ Teaching and learning✔ Communication✔ Participation✔ Personal care, safety, and movement

How does the NCCD help schools?

The NCCD process benefits schools by: Reviewing learning and support systems to ensure students with disabilities receive the necessary adjustments. Providing a greater understanding of student needs to support inclusive education. Developing professional judgement to help school staff make informed decisions about educational adjustments. Recognising and formally documenting the support and adjustments given to students with disabilities.

          Important Information for Parents:

          • The data provided to the Australian Government does not identify individual students (e.g., names and personal details are not shared).
          • The information collected helps determine additional funding and support for students with disability-related learning needs.

For more details, please visit www.nccd.edu.au.

At this time of the year, Defence families begin to prepare for the posting cycle.  In a few weeks’ time, Defence members will learn where they will be posting to for 2026. Some members may stay in location, but many will be moving to other locations around the state, interstate or overseas.

If you are a Defence family who will be moving out of catchment in 2026, please ensure you contact the College to ensure all appropriate exit documentation is completed before your student leaves RVSSC. The Defence School Mentor can also arrange to connect your child with their new DSM once you know the school they will be enrolling into, to help with their transition.

          ANZAC Day Assembly

To commemorate ANZAC Day 2025, RVSSC held its annual ANZAC Day assembly. Readings from Principal Krueger, Mr Paul Rogers (President of the Ipswich RSL Sub-branch) and Chaplain Wayne Ross highlighted the sacrifices that were made by the ANZACs, and in particular the contributions of Indigenous ANZAC's to the Gallipoli and other campaigns during WW1.

In honour of their service, this year the college unveiled our newest silhouette, that of an Indigenous Soldier of the Light Horse regiment.

The Poppy Project - Honouring Our ANZAC's

This week marks the 110th commemoration of the Gallipoli Landings at ANZAC Cove. This year, students, staff and family members have been busy crocheting poppies, which have been collated to create at The Poppy Waterfall.  The display honours all ANZACs who were involved in the campaign and pays tribute to their sacrifice in their bid to secure a safe and secure future for future generations.

The Waterfall is a culmination of a great team effort from our college's community.

The Poppy Waterfall is on display in our library.  Postcards of Honour will also be available in SSS for students to decorate and write a message of thanks to ADF members, past and present.

          Reporting Defence Related Absences

If you are a Defence member who will be posting away or deploying for a significant time, or if you are transitioning out of the ADF, could you please let me know.  This helps me and the college staff provide appropriate support for your child.
