Humanities and Languages

Welcome back to Term 2!

This term is set for some big events both within the classroom and outside - stay tuned for some Humanities Adventures soon!

Late last term, on the 28th of March, Year 11 and 10 Legal Studies students had the valuable opportunity to hear directly from those working on the frontlines of law enforcement and youth justice. Senior Constable Rohan Prince, along with two dedicated members of the Youth Justice Team, visited our school to present a powerful and informative session on the realities of crime, consequences, and community safety.

The presentation focused on the new Adult Crime = Adult Time laws, as well as recent updates to police powers. Through real-life scenarios and honest discussion, students were able to gain a clear understanding of how these laws impact young people and the serious consequences that come with making the wrong choices.

What made the session especially meaningful was the open Q&A, where students were encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and learn directly from the experts. Topics ranged from police procedures and youth rights to the support systems in place for young people who want to make positive changes. This eye-opening session helped students see the bigger picture—not just what the law says, but why it exists and how it affects their futures. It's a reminder that knowledge is power, and making informed choices today can lead to better outcomes tomorrow.

The image below shows the three visitors presenting a short skit involving the theft of a phone in the local shopping centre and explaining what happens to the accused after s/he is detained.

We are looking forward to an eventful Term 2 and cannot wait to share more exciting things with you.

Unforgettable Adventures in Japan: A Journey of Culture, Connection, and Discovery

Our recent school trip to Japan over the holidays was nothing short of extraordinary! From the moment we arrived, students immersed themselves in the vibrant culture, history, and daily life of one of the world’s most fascinating countries.

The journey included a deeply moving visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, where students reflected on history and the importance of peace. The experience was both sobering and inspiring, encouraging thoughtful conversations about resilience and hope where students donated 1000 paper cranes.

From there, we travelled to the breathtaking Miyajima Island, home to the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, with its majestic torii gate rising out of the sea. Surrounded by natural beauty, students marvelled at the harmony between spirituality and the environment that defines much of Japanese culture.

In Kyoto, students explored shrines such as the elegant Heian Jingu Shrine and took part in a fun and delicious cultural experience: okonomiyaki and manju-making cooking classes! These hands-on activities sparked laughter, teamwork, and new appreciation for Japanese cuisine.

A true highlight was the homestay experience in Miyama, where students were warmly welcomed into the homes of local families. This rare opportunity to live and learn alongside our hosts gave students a deeper understanding of everyday Japanese life and created bonds that many will cherish for years to come.

Of course, no trip to Japan would be complete without some excitement and magic—Tokyo Disneyland delivered both in abundance! From thrilling rides to unforgettable shows, students fully embraced the joy and wonder of this world-famous theme park.

We also explored the future of art at the awe-inspiring Teamlab Planets in Tokyo. This interactive digital art museum left everyone awestruck and inspired, blending creativity, technology, and emotion in a way that was truly unforgettable.

Finally, students enjoyed a well-earned shopping day in Gion, Kyoto, picking up souvenirs and experiencing the charm of traditional streets lined with historic wooden machiya houses.

This trip to Japan was more than just a tour—it was a journey of learning, connection, and personal growth. Our students returned with broadened horizons, lasting friendships, and countless stories to share. We're so proud of how they represented our school and grateful for the incredible memories made.

We look forward to plan for the next tour in 2027!
