Dear Parents/Carers,
The last few weeks at school have been a busy time for many staff, students and their families.
At the end of July our Year 9 students and their families participated in the Pathways Preparation Plan (PPP) meetings which have helped our Year 9 students identify the many options available to them in senior school and gain focus on potential career paths for their future.
Meanwhile, our Year 10 students and families have been reviewing their PPP plan from last year and participating in Secondary Education & Training (SET) Plan meetings. These SET plan meetings have been a great opportunity for students and parents to review their plan and progress from last year and realign and continue developing their pathway plan for when they complete Year 12.
The positive involvement of students, staff and parents in this process has been invaluable and ensures that every child has the best possible opportunities available for them as they prepare for life after school. I also want to thank the many staff who have been involve on these days to make them the great success they have been. From organising career days, work experience, career education programs and giving up time to meet both in and out of work hours; the dedication of our staff has made a significant impact on your child's future.
As we approach the 2nd half of this term, staff and students will be entering the busy assessment and reporting period and I encourage everyone to make sure they take time to rest, refresh and relax in their spare time during this busy season.
Once again, I appreciate the work of all our staff and families in partnering with our College and look forward to sharing the great successes of our students for years to come.
Yours Sincerely,

We are half way through the term and there is so much happening in the English faculty!
On Thursday 4th August 2022, our Senior Readers Cup team competed in the Brisbane West Regional Competition. With COVID threatening the competition for the second year in a row, the competition was run remotely. Our senior team were the only State High school in the region to compete and finished in the top 10. Congratulations girls! We are super proud of you!! Thank you to Ms Marks for her organisation and support!!
On Wednesday, 33 Year 8 students participated in the inaugural Ripley 'Spelling Bee'! It was an intense competition with the finalists continuing to battle on into overtime after the home-time bell!
It was such a close competition, with Aaron finally securing the win, with the correct spelling of 'Rudimentary'. Second and third place were equally competitive, with Christina and Hunta neck and neck over multiple rounds, before Christina correctly spelled the word 'unanimous' to win second place.
All students are congratulated on their effort- we have some amazing spellers in Year 8! Well done, Aaron, Christina and Hunta- our top three Year 8 spellers in 2022! I HUGE thank you to Mrs Martins for organising this event - we are looking forward to next year!
In addition to the Spelling Bee, there are many more opportunities in the English faculty for our creative writer and speakers.
Entry is NOW OPEN for the 2022 Schools Poetry & Short Story 'Unleashed' Writing Competition! Students all over Australia are invited to enter their 16 line poems OR 500 word short stories, and battle it out for the great cash & prizes on offer. There is no theme!! Entrants are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild and write on ANY TOPIC and in ANY STYLE. Students from ALL GRADES are welcome to enter - Kindergarten to Grade 12. Entry is FREE and all entries must be in by the closing date of 28 August 2022! For entry details and information, please see your English teacher, Ms Diesing or Ms Wilkinson in the library. Alternatively, email your entry to Ms Diesing jbunt18@eq.edu.au
Australian students enrolled in Years 10 to 12 are invited to enter the 'My First Speech' competition. You can enter as a team or as an individual. Imagine yourself as a newly elected Member of the House of Representatives. Your task is to write a 90 second speech about issues you are passionate about then record yourself presenting the speech on video. The video should be in MPG, MPEG, M4V, MPEG 4, AVI, WMV or MOV format with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels or above and no longer than 90 seconds in length. A winner from each Year 10, 11 and 12, will be invited to Canberra to deliver their speeches live and undertake a program of meetings at Parliament House. To enter the competition, please see Ms Diesing or email jbunt18@eq.edu.au
And lastly, good luck to the 30 students who are participating in the Cancer Council's Write a Book in a Day competition. Teams will spend up to 12 hours on Friday, planning, writing, editing, illustrating, and publishing a book for the Children's Hospital Online Library.
Not only do our students have access to these amazing opportunities, they have been working super hard in class too.
Our Year 7's have been deep diving into poetry this term, and Ms Marks' 7C has completed an in-depth analysis of the poem Still I Rise by Maya Angelou. After unpacking the meaning as a class, students took what they learned from the poem and created a poster where they put the highlights onto a single piece of paper. They conveyed the messages and purpose of the poem, and selected images that capture the emotions and impact. It was such a great way to demonstrate their learning and Ms Marks is very proud of their effort and maturity.
Over this past fortnight we were lucky enough to have our first ever entrants into the Australian Mathematics Competition. The competition included all students within the Ignite program and other students were invited to nominate also. Congratulations to these 22 students who sat for this Competition. We are so excited to offer opportunities to our students to compete at a National level. We look forward to seeing how these students performed when the results are returned to us. A big thank you to Mrs Constable for supporting this competition and for the student for demonstrating perseverance through the competition.
And just a quick reminder that as we approach assessment time with our Math classes to please ensure your child has a scientific calculator, stationary, a mathematics notebook and a charged laptop with them at school. It is really important that students have their own scientific calculator so they can familiarise themselves with this device ahead of examinations.

As we head into the middle of Term 3, we have seen a huge amount of learning packed around various school events. Next week (15th-19th August), our school will be celebrating National Science Week with activities throughout the week. Students will have the opportunity to be involved in a number of activities, which can be seen below.
As we head towards the end of term, we will see students begin to start working on assessment across various grades. Year 7 and 8 students will be working on their Physics experiments, creating balloon-powered cars, and Rube Goldberg machines.
The Year 9 students will be conducting their Chemistry experiments to design and create cold packs. Year 10 core students are currently completing their rates of reaction experimental investigation for the term.
Our Year 10 Science Foundation students are investigating DNA, and have their exam at the end of the term. The Year 10 extension Chemistry class is balancing chemical equations and investigating reaction types and will be starting their investigations in the coming weeks.
Our extension Psychology class is busy delving into how the brain works and will also be starting their investigations in the coming weeks.
All assessment information can be found within Daymap and it is important to remind students that all assessments should be uploaded to Daymap as well. If, for any reason, your student needs to apply for an extension, this should be done online, and more information can be found in their student diary or on the College SharePoint page.
Across the grades we are seeing many classes engaged in practical activities and it is an important reminder that students must comply with the College’s uniform to be allowed to engage in these lessons as a matter of safety. Please ensure your student has the appropriate leather footwear available and their hair tied up.
If you ever have any questions around what is happening within your child’s Science class, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me.

Our Design Technology curriculum aims to:
- Develop students critical thinking, enabling them to justify what they like and dislike when designing and making;
- Enable students to investigate and talk about how things work, and to communicate ideas;
- Encourage students to select the most appropriate tools and techniques for making a product, whilst following safe procedures;
- Explore attitudes towards the ‘made’ world and how we live and work within it;
- Develop an understanding of technological processes and products, their manufacture and their contribution to our society;
- Appreciate the work of contemporary and historic designers and their contribution to the world in which we live;
- Foster enjoyment, satisfaction and purpose in designing and making things;
- Develop evaluation skills to critically analyse and improve products and designs;
- Develop the cross-curricular use of Design Technology in other subjects, particularly Computing, Maths and Science.
Through the DT curriculum, children should be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real life purpose.
Our Year 10 Students this term are developing skills with new machinery in the workshop including the CNC router and the bandsaw to make a Tambour Box. This project will require students to focus on joinery and craftsmanship.

Dance students are about to present their performance tasks in classes. This week our students have been submitting their drafts which is a great chance for students to receive feedback prior to their final assessment date. Occasionally dance students have had the opportunity to watch other classes performance tasks which is a great experience to watch other dance styles.
Drama
Drama students are working towards their first piece of assessment. Our Year 8 students are working on their "Honey Spot" performance tasks and are working within the Australian Theatre style. For many students this will be the first time they have performed in a drama piece and we encourage them to have fun, be creative and enjoy the experience.

Regional Youth Mental Health Forum 2022
Fourteen of our student leaders and Year 10 Peer Mentors travelled to the Laidley Cultural Centre on Thursday 14th July to attend ‘Talk it up’, a forum to reduce the stigma around mental health. Our students and other young people from the region, listened to a key note speaker from Livin about practical everyday ways to manage mental health. Students also learned and talked about mental health wellness at a series of interactive workshops based around the Wheel of Wellbeing.
The Wheel of Wellbeing helps individuals build skills and raise awareness about improving mental health and wellbeing through six dimensions. It is a holistic approach to wellbeing, conveying a message of achieving balance in life.

GPs in Schools Pilot program
Ripley Valley State Secondary College was selected to participate in the GPs in Schools Pilot. The Pilot is part of the Queensland Government's Student Well-being Package, an initiative which makes it easier for all Ripley Valley SSC students and students in Year 6 at Ripley Valley SS to access the healthcare they need.
The Pilot has allowed our school to set up a fit-for-purpose GP clinic in our B block, Community Hub which already houses a community midwife clinic. This clinic provides students with access to a GP each Friday during school terms.
Our school clinic staff – Rachael Pratt (GP administrator); Janet Ingram (Guidance Officer and program lead); Brendan Krueger (Principal); Dr Dushyant Singh (GP); and Daniel Pym (Deputy Principal and program lead).
Parents/Guardians and Students are able to book an appointment with the School GP by:
Email: GPbookings@ripleyvalleySSC.com.au
Phone: 3819 5321
Students may also book an appointment by speaking directly with the Administrative Co-ordinator in Student Support Services (J Block) and an appointment slip will be emailed to you. If you are a first-time user of the clinic, please register you (student) or your child’s details using this link:
https://urgentcarebne.snapforms.com.au/form/student-registration-form---ripley-school-
This will register your medicare number, but the booking must be made via the options given above (email, phone or in person at Student Support Services).
What services will the GP provide?
Our school GP clinic will offer secondary students the majority of services that young people are able to access from GPs in the community, including management of physical health, mental health, and sexual and reproductive health issues. The school GP clinic is not a vaccination centre.
Will there be a cost for students to see the GP?
All visits to the GP will be provided at no cost to students or their families. The GP will bulk-bill all appointments through Medicare, so it is important that students bring their Medicare card (or their Medicare number) with them to their appointment.
Introducing Dr Dushyant Singh, a General Practitioner (GP) and director of Urgent care Brisbane.
Dr Dushyant Singh was born in Amritsar, India, famous for Golden Temple. Dr Dushyant always wanted to be a doctor and worked diligently to enter medical school. He is an excellent footballer and at one point he represented his school at national level. After finishing Medicine, he worked in GP and Emergency. In Australia, he completed his fellowship General Practice and continued to practice as a GP with emergency skills while in Australia. Dr Singh is now director of Urgent Care Brisbane, a medical practice which treats walk in emergency appointments. Dr Singh’s passion for the adolescent health is evident. He states, “It comes with many challenges, and I still study and keep myself updated. I have always found adolescent Medicine very interesting and have developed skills of instant rapport building, a highly essential skill in consulting with adolescents! All doctors at Urgent care Brisbane are highly passionate and are welcoming of the state government initiative of GP in schools pilot program.”

During Week 3 of this term Ripley Valley SSC held its first Defence Week.
This initiative is designed to help build a better understanding in the wider school community of the challenges that are faced by our ADF students, in particular, how those challenges might affect their education. The focus this year was ‘The Impact the Military Lifestyle has on Defence Families’.
The week began with a guest speaker from the RAAF Base Amberley, who graciously shared experiences of her time in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Her presentation and PowerPoint detailed a career that has involved many moves and many absences due to her service commitments, including deployments.
Staff and students alike were offered a small insight into some of the challenges Defence members and their children face, due to the mobile lifestyle of the ADF. Students were particularly interested in the photo's that were shared as part of the presentation.
Our guest speaker is a full time serving member of the RAAF, a Defence spouse and a Defence mum and we are extremely appreciative to her for making herself available to come and talk to our school community.
A visual display was set up in the Library through the week, with stories from Defence students and staff who shared some personal experiences of life in the military, in particular the impact of postings and parental absences. Military items and uniform were also loaned to the school for the display.
The Defence Club also opened its door to the whole school. Students had the opportunity to chat with Defence students and to also participate in poppy making activities.
Defence Week was a real team effort and would not have been possible without the help from staff, students and ADF parents. As an ex-Defence member, spouse and Mum, I was so proud to be able to show this aspect of military life to the school and by extension to the wider community. There are many Defence personnel, and their families, who call the Ripley Valley home. On behalf of the Ripley Valley SSC, I would like to pass on our appreciation to all Defence members, and their families, who work everyday to ensure the safety and security of Australia and its citizens, so that we may live our lives with a freedom many around the world are not afforded.
Vietnam Veterans Day
On the 18th August, we commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966.
It is a day where we recognise all that served and honour those who lost their lives during battle and those that returned only to still carry the physical and emotional scars of their service.
Lest We Forget
Ripley Valley SSC will be represented by our school Principal, myself and two ADF students of the college.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank to Westside Christian College for running a fundraiser for our Breakfast Club Program last term. The program couldn't operate as effectively as it does without the generous donations from organisations, other schools and individuals as well as the work of our volunteers to operate it from the day to day. Thank you also to the students and parents who have volunteered in the past and in the present.
Programs
Later term I will be running a Rock & Water program with a group of year 8 boys.
Rock and water is a program that decreases bullying and depressive feelings, and increases self-esteem, self-regulation and social acceptance. It also builds self-confidence, self-respect and self-reflection through psychophysical training.
If your child has been selected please check your emails for the permission form.
The second Program that will be running late this term and early next term is the Love Bites Program. This will be facilitated by myself and Alicia our Youth Worker. Love Bites is a highly regarded program that aims to provide young people with a safe environment to examine, discuss and explore respectful relationships. The Program takes a strengths-based approach and views young people as active participants who are able to make choices for themselves and their relationships when supported with information and opportunity for skill development.
Love Bites education is focused on three critical areas for learning; knowledge (youth-led collaborative learning), attitudes (critical thinking and decision-making) and behaviours (problem solving and communication skills). The overall aim of this program is to equip young people with the knowledge needed to have respectful relationships, encourage and develop their skills in critical thinking and assist them in being able to problem solve and communicate effectively. When equipped in these areas, we believe that young people can make the right choices for themselves and their relationships that are free from violence and abuse.
If your child has been selected please check your emails for the permission form.

We all deserve respectful, safe and non-violent environments, so aggression and harassment of any kind—physical, verbal or otherwise—isn't acceptable.
When you interact with school staff, remember we're all on the same team to support your child. We all have your child's best interests at heart, and the best way to achieve a positive learning experience is to work together.
