School Newsletter (Week 1, Term 4)

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to Term 4 and what will soon be the completion of our foundation year at Ripley Valley State Secondary College.  Over the past 10 months our College has created a strong and positive school culture that is living up to our motto of "Achieving Excellence Together". Despite the unique challenges that we have faced this year, I am constantly reminded and see examples of parents, staff and students working together to make our college a better place.  It is only through the hard work, commitment and dedication of so many that our school has been able to achieve so much in such a short time.  For those new students and families to our college I welcome you and would encourage you to join our P & C Association and school community to build on the great work already started.
On Wednesday the 28th October we celebrate our first Awards evening and announce our first junior School Captains and Vice Captains for 2021.  This historic occasion will provide a opportunity for us to recognise and acknowledge student achievement and also reflect on our first year achievements as a college.  Further information will be provided closer to the date and I look forward to seeing many of you at this evening.
This term will see a number of other significant events with the celebration of NAIDOC week, Remembrance Day, Foundation Park and time capsule development, Year 6 into 7 Orientation Day and our P & C State of Origin and election day BBQ fundraising events. More information about these events will be provided on our school website, Facebook, newsletter and other social media platforms.   Once again, I look forward to sharing these significant events with our college community and encourage you to attend these special occasions.
As we near the end of the 2020 school year, planning is well and truly underway for 2021 and our stage 2 building works which will further expand and enhance our student learning spaces.   Combined with this significant facility improvements is the creation of our College's four year Strategic Plan.  This term, all school community members and stakeholders are invited to provide their feedback into our future direction and priorities for 2021 -2024.  Following consultation with staff, students and community members to date a draft Strategic Plan has been developed and your feedback and input is welcome.  To view our College's 4 year Strategic Plan please open the attached document and you are welcome to provide further feedback or suggestions through the attached survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZGDW5KF
Following this feedback an updated Strategic Plan will be shared in the next newsletter for final feedback before ratification by the P & C Association and Department of Education later this year.
Once again, as Principal, I am incredibly proud of our College's achievements in such a short period of time and I look forward to leading us into the future as we strive to "Achieve Excellence Together".

Yours sincerely,

Brendan Krueger

Head of Goolman House

The beginning of Term 4 sees some changes to our Teaching and Leadership teams. At the end of Term 3, we farewelled Ms Lauren Tull (Head of Goolman House, Maths, Science and HPE). Ms Tull was an integral part of the foundation of Ripley Valley SSC and was travelling a significant distance to be at our school each day. Due to this, Ms Tull has relocated to a school closer to her home. We thank her for her time and efforts at RVSSC and wish her well at her next school.

Mr Riley Stewart has joined our teaching team to teach Ms Tull's classes whilst we are recruiting a permanent replacement for the Head of Department position. During this transition time, I will be performing the duties of the Head of Goolman House. Most Goolman students are already familiar with me as I have been supporting them all year as their Deputy Principal. If your student is in Goolman House and you require support with wellbeing, attendance, assessment or assistance with contacting teachers, please contact either myself (epren3@eq.edu.au) or James Dunn - House Coordinator Goolman and Perry (jdunn232@eq.edu.au).

Preservice Teachers

This week we have welcomed three preservice teachers from USQ to our school. Mr Adan Cameron, Mr Michael Munro and Mr Joseph Allison will be completing their placements at RVSSC over the next three weeks. As a College, we believe that it is important to invest our time and energy into supporting our future teachers and modelling lifelong learning and collaboration with our wider community to our students. We know that our College community will welcome them and assist with their ongoing education during their time with us.

Term 3 Report Cards

Interim Reports were issued for all students during the last week of Term 3. These report cards indicate your child's progress half way through Semester 2. If you wish to discuss any aspects of your student's Interim Report please contact teachers directly via email, Daymap message or phone the College Administration. There are no further opportunities for Parent Teacher Interviews in 2020.

If you have not received your student's Report Card, please email administration@ripleyvalleyssc.eq.edu.au and a copy will be issued. Please remember to check your Spam inbox as the Reports are issued automatically from One School.

Welcome back to Term 4, our final Term for 2020!
Our team have been busy learning new tools to help our students achieve the best outcomes. This term we will be trialling assistive technology in some of our Year 7 classes. Below is a snapshot of some of the Tools we will be trialling from our new Microsoft Software.
Microsoft Inclusive Classrooms:
Click on this link to view the Learning Tools:https://youtu.be/ZrO-l1IKjbw

What are Inclusive Classrooms?

Inclusive Classrooms essentially means that everyone is welcome. There are many ways to help students feel welcomed and included in school. One way is how we present and teach curriculum. This Term we are working on ways to support students using the amazing technology we have available.

The Trial

We recognise that everyone is unique and bring their own sets of strengths and weaknesses. Fair is not always Equal (as the graphic below explains) so we need to be flexible with supporting students in learning. Through this trial, we aim to improve students independent work by providing the Microsoft Learning Tools to support everyone.

The Trial will take place with 1 class during Term 4 and teachers will be gathering data on engagement and achievement. If our results show great improvement, we will then extend to the rest of the school.

Support for my child
Teachers are reviewing students results from Term 3 and comparing this with the strategies they have been using in the classroom. Students with Personalised Learning Plans will have these reviewed over the next few weeks.
If you have any concerns or questions regarding your childs' schooling, have a chat with their teachers. We all work together as a holistic team to support students and the first point of call is always with the classroom teachers.

Guidance News

Wellbeing education is a priority in Queensland schools, as outlined in the Student learning and wellbeing framework, and we have been working hard this year to ensure that our school community is working to maximise student wellbeing. Some of the ways that we have been fostering wellbeing include: PBL lessons and social goals; schoolwide wellbeing events; House Coordinators; house days; rewards; support programs; support staff.

If you have any suggestions on how we can continue to foster student wellbeing, please feel free to email me directly.

Mental Health Week

During the second week of this term, our school community will be involved in activities to promote Mental Health Week (11th-17th October). Queensland Mental Health Week occurs each year and is run to increase awareness of individual and community mental health. We are fortunate to have a variety of representatives from support organisations that service the community visiting the school, including Kids Helpline; Anglicare; QYFSS; QLD Police; Open Arms; and many more.

The activity schedule is as follows:

Monday 12th: Mental Health Expo (1pm)

Thursday 15th: Students Vs Emergency Services basketball game (1pm)

Thursday 15th: LIVIN presentation (1:30pm)

Caring for the mental health of our young people is extremely important, as 75% of mental issues occur before the age of 25 (Beyond Blue, 2020). The Australian Government's Head to Health website is an excellent resource if you are supporting someone with mental health issues, are struggling yourself, or would like further information on mental health topics.

Lisa Henderson

Guidance Officer

Welcome back to Term 4. We hope that you and your families had a relaxing holiday. We entered our holidays on a high after seeing our students participate in our first ever school incursion on the last day of Term 3. We were lucky to welcome three facilitators from Ylead to the school for the day to run leadership activities with our students. Student participation was excellent and it was great to see our kids getting involved and giving it a go. The day was designed for students to find out what leadership strengths they possess plus it was an awesome opportunity for them to work with peers from other classes.

As the end of the year approaches we are excited to start working towards our 2021 goals. Just this week we have closed off the Leadership applications for the 2021 School Captains and House Captains. With an abundance of outstanding applications from our year 8 cohort we are now busy putting together the shortlist which will go out to student and staff vote. Once this information has been collected our Leadership team will finalise the positions and announce them at Awards Night in Week 4.  Good luck to all students that applied.

Next week we are taking several year 8 leaders over to Deebing Heights State School to run some activities as a part of their NAIDOC week celebrations. We will see some of our own NAIDOC celebrations happening here at RVSSC later in the term. We have many other activities coming up this term including partnerships with Ripley Valley State School, our Wet n’ Wild rewards day and Feel Good Friday to promote student well-being – just to name a few. It is another busy term here at RVSSC and as always we are excited to work with our students, staff, parents and community over the coming weeks.

If you find that your child can access any websites that they shouln't please let me know so I can investigate.
As per Michelle Mills notice regarding the SRS payments, final payments are due next Friday. I will be in touch with any families that have an outstanding amount to arrange the collection of devices.  Students with no outstanding amounts will be able to keep their devices over the Christmas break.

This term we are conducting an internal school wide competition, however next year we have registered for a number of competitions in and around Brisbane and will compete in a number of games with students from other schools.
Our eSports program includes exercise, nutrition and wellbeing components. Our school website will be updated over the coming weeks to include comprehensive information about this new initiative, and the exciting eSport senior pathways we will be introducing from 2022.

    Defence News

Welcome back to all students for the last term of the school year. No doubt it will be a busy term for everyone as we now look forward to completing the Foundation year for Ripley Valley State Secondary College. It is a milestone for students, their families, School staff and the wider community to be very proud of.

This time of the year sees the release of Postings and Deployments of ADF personnel, which can have an impact on students and their families. The Student Services Welfare Hub offers all manner of support to students during these disruptive and sometimes upsetting times. The Hub is designed to help students cope and ultimately thrive while dealing with these changes. The team at RVSSC consists of myself, the Defence School Mentor;  Lisa Henderson, the Guidance Officer;  Rhiannon Kemp, the Head of Inclusions;  Jeff Dukleski, our Youth Worker and Kristian Atkins, our School Chaplain. We are all here to help support your students to maximise their learning. If the need arises, please feel free to chat with us. We are here for you and your students

On the 11th of November, we will be commemorating Remembrance Day. This term the Defence Club will make a Wreath to lay on Remembrance Day in recognition of the lives that have been lost from all wars and conflicts. I will be enlisting the help of students (Defence and their friends) to create the wreath. If you have any ideas on wreath making that you would like to contribute, please feel free to do so as I am very much a novice. I hope to have representatives from the Defence Student Community to lay the wreath on Remembrance Day.

At the end of last term I finally got to meet most of the Defence students. It was wonderful to finally meet everyone in person, which has been a bit tricky due to class and exam scheduling. The students enjoyed a Pizza lunch, which despite my concerns at being over supplied, was keenly devoured. I can't wait for the next end of term lunch!

All the very best to all students for the remainder of the year.
