Health and Physical Education, Mathematics and Science

Health and Physical Education
As we embark on our online home learning package, it is important to take a moment to reflect on our own and others mental health and wellbeing.  In HPE over the coming weeks, we will be introducing students to their own personal health and wellness through the Dimensions of Health.

  • Ways to develop physical wellness:
  • Exercise, eat healthy and getting 6-8 hours sleep every night
  • Ways to develop emotional health:
  • Maintaining a positive attitude, develop a stress reliever, converse with someone
  • Ways to develop intellectual health:
  • Become a life-long learner, seek academic health if needed, take education seriously and spend time reading, writing and listening.
  • Ways to develop social health:
  • Get involved in a club or organisation, spend time with friends, recognise when you’re in an unhealthy relationship and balance social life with academic responsibility.
  • Ways to develop spiritual health:
  • Find a quiet place and spend time there daily, contemplate the meaning of life, if you have a religion – study and practice it, spend time appreciating the natural world around you.
  • Ways to develop environmental health:
  • Recycle, conserve energy, volunteer with environmental organisations, become aware of earth’s natural resources and spend time outdoors.

Mathematics

In Mathematics this term, we are focusing on measurement and data collection methods.  Over the coming weeks our Year 8 students will be designing a new backyard and creating a space for their own gardens.  Year 7 students will be investigating data and all that data has to offer.
We are also using MangaHigh as a platform for our online learning to consolidate the textbook learning and provide some game based learning options for our students.
Science
Our Year 8 students are studying all things rocks and minerals.  We will be providing them with an opportunity to explore their local area or backyard and seeing what rocks or minerals they might discover.  Hopefully they might be able to find their own piece of gold or an opal.  As part of their home learning journey students will also be able to utilise JacPlus and STILE to complete their work.
Year 7 students spent a couple of lessons last term delving into the concept of sustainability and renewable resources.  This term our focus is looking at an every day object and discovering how biodegradable the object is and making improvements to the object to make it more sustainable or more biodegradable.  They will have time to delve into the world of composting, water ways and recycling.
Overall, we look forward to seeing how our students progress through their home learning program and are excited to see their products as a result of their assignments.
